இம்மைப் பிறப்பில் பிரியலம் என்றேனாக் 


கண்நிறை நீர்கொண் டனள்.

                           (குறள் 1315: புலவி நுணுக்கம் அதிகாரம்)


இம்மைப் பிறப்பில் - இப்பிறப்பிலே

பிரியலம் என்றேனாக் 
- நாம் பிரியமாட்டோம் என்றேன்

கண்நிறை - கண்களை நிறைத்து

நீர் கொண்டனள் - அவள் கண்களில் கண்ணீர் கொண்டாள்

நான் காதலியிடம், இப்பிறப்பில் நாம் பிரியவே மாட்டோம் என்று சொன்னேன், அன்பு மேலீட்டால். ஆனால் அவளோ, கண்களையே மறைக்கும் படியாக கண்ணீர் பெருக நின்றாள், நான் குறிப்பால் அடுத்தப்பிறப்பில் பிரிவோம் என்று பொருளுணர்த்தியதாக எண்ணி, என்று தலைவன் கூறுகிறான்.

Transliteration:

Immaip piRappil piriyalam enREnAk

kaNNiRai nIrkON DanaL

Immaip piRappil – In this birth

piriyalam enREnAk – I said we would not separate

kaNNiRai – for he eyes to brim with

nIr kONDanaL – had tears in her eyes

“I told my beloved that we would not separate in this birth, out of deep love; but she had eyes brimming with tears as if I was implying that we would separate in the next birth”, laments the man about her maiden flimsy reason for feeling sad.
