அரம்பொருத பொன்போலத் தேயும் உரம்பொருது

உட்பகை உற்ற குடி.

                        (குறள் 888: உட்பகை அதிகாரம்)

அரம் பொருத - கொல்லன் கை பொன்னைத் தேய்க்கும் கருவியால் தேய்க்கப்பட்ட

பொன் போலத் தேயும் - பொன் தேய்வது போல தேய்ந்தழியும்

உரம் பொருது - தங்கள் வலிமையால், யார் வலிமிக்கவர் என்கிற போட்டிச் சண்டையில்

உட்பகை உற்ற - உட்பகை கொண்டு உழலுகின்ற

குடி - குலம்

கொல்லன் கையில் உள்ள, பொன்னை அறுக்கின்ற அரமானது தேய்த்துத் தேய்த்தே பொன்னைக் குறைத்துவிடும். அதைப்போல தங்களுள் யார் பெரியவர் என்கிறப் போட்டிச் சண்டையில் உருவாகும் உட்பகையில் ஒருவருடைய குலமே சுற்றத்தோடு முற்றுமழியும். இக்குறளின் உவமை மிக சிறப்பானது. குடியின் ஒற்றுமை பொன்போன்றது; உட்பகை என்பது அரம் போன்றது; மெதுவாக மறைமுகப் போட்டிச் சண்டையை உருவாக்கி ஒருவரை ஒருவர் அழித்துக்கொள்ளவே உதவும். ஒருவருக்கு எதிராக மற்றொருவர் கொள்ளும் உட்பகை போலல்லாது ஒருவருக்குகொருவர் கொள்ளும் உட்பகையை அழகாக உருவமிக்கும் குறளிது.

“கண்ணுக்குக் கண்” என்று ஆனால் மற்றவர்கள் கண்களுக்குத் தெரியாமல் வளர்ந்து, தங்கள் குலத்தையே முற்றும் அழிக்கச் செய்வது.

Transliteration:

Aramporuda ponpoLath thEyum uramporudu

uTpagai uRRa kuDi

aram poruda – Like the file in the goldsmiths’ hand

Pon poLath thEyum – can file away the gold, will diminish and perish

uram porudu – in the competitive binge as to who is mightier

uTpagai uRRa – mutually fosters enmity within

kuDi – the entire clan

The file in the hand of a gold smith can file the entire gold away. Likewise, mutually fostered enmity within a clan, in a binge of competition as to who is mightier, can completely perish them. The metaphor here is subtle and beautiful. The comparison of gold to the togetherness, implies how precious the togetherness for a clan is. Also, how the competitiveness and ensuing hidden enmity within, slowly but surely  can diminish that togetherness and completely destroy them.

“An eye for an eye will make everyone blind”, is equally applicable for hidden enmity, though enmity is not seen in this case.

“Like a file in the goldsmith’s hand can diminish the gold slowly

 the hidden enmity within, will perish the clan perish eventually”

செப்பின் புணர்ச்சிபோல் கூடினும் கூடாதே

உட்பகை உற்ற குடி.

                        (குறள் 887: உட்பகை அதிகாரம்)

செப்பின் - செப்புத் தகடினால் ஆகிய பாத்திரத்தின்  மூடி

புணர்ச்சிபோல் - அதனுடைய பாத்திரத்தோடு சேர்ந்திருப்பதுபோல்

கூடினும் கூடாதே - சேர்ந்திருப்பினும் இரண்டும் தனியாக ஒன்றொடொன்று உள்ளத்தால் கூடாதவையாம்

உட்பகை உற்ற - உட்பகையை தம்முள் வைத்திருக்கும்

குடி - குடியினர்.

ஒன்றாக சேர்ந்திருப்பதுபோல் தோன்றினும், ஜாடியும் மூடியும் இரண்டாக பிளவு பட்டவையே. அதே போன்றோர்தான் உட்பகையால் உழலும் குடியினரும் - வெளிப் பார்வைக்கு சேர்ந்திருப்பதுபோல தோன்றினாலும், அவர்கள் பிளவு பட்டவர்களே. ஜாடி என்பது இந்தி மொழிச் சொல்லாக இருப்பினும் எதுகை தரும் ஓசை நயத்துக்காகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது. குப்பி அல்லது சிமிழ் என்ற சொற்கள் அழகானவை.  செப்பு, சொப்பு போன்றவையும் புழக்கத்தில் இருந்திருக்கின்றன.

சிமிழோ, குப்பியோ, அவற்றின் மூடியோடு சேர்ந்திருந்தால்தான் அழகு. தவிர அவை  எல்லோரும் அறிந்தே இரண்டாக இருந்து, தோற்றத்திற்கு ஒன்றாக இருப்பவை. வெளியில் உள்ளவர்களால் பிரிக்கப்பட்டாலே தவிர விட்டுப் பிரியாதவை. உட்பகையோ இதற்கு நேர் மாறானது. யாருக்குமே சேர்ந்திருப்பதுபோல் தோன்றினாலும், உள்ளுக்குள் பகையாகவே இருக்கும், அழிக்கத் தருணத்தையே பார்த்திருக்கும். தவிரவும் வெளியிலிருப்பவர்களின் தூண்டுதல் பிரியும் வேகத்தை அதிகரிக்கலாமே தவிர, தாமாகவே அழித்துக்கொள்ள முனைபவை. சிமிழுக்கும் அதன் மூடிக்கும் வெளியில் இருப்பவர்களால்தான் பிரிவும், பிளவும். ஆனால் உட்பகைக் கொண்டவர்களுக்கு அவர்களாலேயே அது நிகழும். இக்குறளின் உவமை சற்றும் பொருந்தாததாகவே உள்ளது.

Transliteration:

Seppin puNarchchipOl kUDinum kUDAdhE

uTpagai uRRa kuDi

Seppin – the lid of the vessel made with copper

puNarchchipOl – like how it may be in snug fit with its vessel

kUDinum kUDAdhE – those seem to be together, in hearts they are not united (who?)

uTpagai uRRa – that who nurture enmity within (who?)

kuDi – apparently closely knit kin

Though apparently join together, the lid and its vessel are separate. Likewise, is the kin that have a façade of outward kinship, but inside with a seething enmity, says this verse. Though outwardly this verse seems to have a meaningful metaphor, it does not seem to make sense. The simmering enmity in outwardly closely-knit kin will destroy each other; it is better off for those apparently close kin to separate permanently, instead of being together and trying to destroy each other; but, this not the case with a vessel and its lid. But for an external agent, they don’t have enmity between them and they are useful only as a unit.

Is like a lid with its vessel, together, but connection none”

ஒன்றாமை ஒன்றியார் கட்படின் எஞ்ஞான்றும்

பொன்றாமை ஒன்றல் அரிது.

                        (குறள் 886: உட்பகை அதிகாரம்)

ஒன்றாமை - உள்ளத்தாள் ஒன்றாது, உட்பகை

ஒன்றியார்கட்படின் - உற்றாரோடு இருக்குமாயின்

எஞ்ஞான்றும் - எப்போதும், எக்காலத்தும்

பொன்றாமை - அழிவில்லாமை

ஒன்றல் அரிது -கூடுதல் அரிதாம்

உள்ளத்தால் ஒன்றாது உற்றத்தாரோடு உட்பகைக் கொள்வார்க்கு எக்காலத்திலும், அழிவில்லாமை கூடுதல் என்பதரிது, என்று இக்குறள் சொல்லுகிறது. சென்ற குறளையே வேறு விதமாக சொற்களால் முடைந்த குறள். சிறப்பாகச் சொல்வதற்கு ஒன்றுமில்லாத குறள்.

Transliteration:

onRAmai onRiyAr kaTpaDin enjAnRum

ponRAmai onRal aridhu

onRAmai –  if discord

onRiyArkaTpaDin – sets in with kith and kin

enjAnRum - always

ponRAmai – not being destroyed

onRal aridhu – to happen is rare and difficult

Without being in harmony with kith and kin, to that who brews enmity within shall always and destruction; For them not to perish is rare, says this verse. This verse seems to be jut reshuffle words from previous verse to get this verse. Nothing new that has not been said earlier

“For one who is not in harmony with his kin,

 Not rare to perish and be destroyed by own”

இன்றெனது குறள்:

உற்றாரோ டுட்பகை உண்டாயின் எப்போதும்

முற்றழிதல் நீங்கல் அரிது.
