குறிப்பிற் குறிப்புணரா ராயின் உறுப்பினுள்

என்ன பயத்தவோ கண்.

                        (குறள் 705: குறிப்பறிதல்அதிகாரம்)

குறிப்பிற் - ஒருவரது முகக்குறிப்பால்

குறிப்புணரார் - அவர் அகத்தில் உள்ளதை அறியமாட்டார்

ஆயின் - ஆக இருக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு

உறுப்பினுள் - அவர்க்கு இருக்கும் உறுப்புகளில்

என்ன பயத்தவோ - என்ன பயனைக் கொண்டவைக்

கண் - கண்கள்/

கண்படைத்த ஒருவருக்கு மற்றொருவரைக் கண்ட கணமே அவரது உள்ளத்தை ஊடுருவும் திறன் இல்லாவிட்டால், அவர் படைத்த கண்களுக்கு என்ன பயனிருக்கும். சென்ற குறளும், இக்குறளும் குறிப்புணரா அமைச்சர்களை இடித்துரைப்பவையாக உள்ளன. பழமொழி நானூற்றுப் பாடலொன்று, “கணையிலும் கூரியவாம் கண்” என்கிறது!

Transliteration:

kuRippiR kuRippuNarA rAyin uRuppinuL

enna payaththavO kaN?

kuRippiR – by just looking at someone’s face

kuRippuNarAr – not knowing what is in their mind

Ayin – for such person (who can not read a face)

uRuppinuL- among his bodily faculties

enna payaththavO – what use is it to have

kaN? – the eyes?

What use is to have eyes that cannot assess and understand what is deep inside a persons mind, by what  his face shows? – asks this verse, More than anyone, this verse is also appropriate to ministers of a state, who have to be guarded with anyone and everyone. The questioning format is to ask people that lack such sharp eyes. Like a sharp arrow must be a minister’s eye in gauging that deal wit the state is implied.

“What use is to have eyes that cannot gauge what is

 deep inside by looking at the face of a person, as is!”

குறித்தது கூறாமைக் கொள்வாரோ டேனை

உறுப்போ ரனையரால் வேறு.

                        (குறள் 704: குறிப்பறிதல்அதிகாரம்)

குறித்தது - மற்றவர் உள்ளத்தில் குறித்ததை

கூறாமைக் - அவர்கள் கூறாமலும்

கொள்வாரோ(டு) - அறிந்து கொள்வாரோடு

ஏனை  - மற்ற

உறுப்போரனையரால்  - அவையங்களால் ஒத்தவர் போலிருப்பினும்

வேறு - அவர்கள் இயல்பால், அறிவால் வேறே

இதுவும் வெறும் அதிகார நிரப்பியான குறளே! அவையங்களாலும், உருவத்தாலும் ஒத்தவர்களாயிருப்பினும், மற்றவர் உள்ளத்தில் உள்ளதை அவர்கள் கூறாமலேயே குறிப்பால் அறிவோர், அறிவினால் வேறுபட்டவர்களே,  

“மின்னுவதெல்லாம் பொன்னல்ல” என்ற பழமொழிக்கும், “எப்பொருள் எத்தன்மைத்தாயினும்..” என்ற குறளுக்கும் வேண்டுமானாலும் பொருந்துமே தவிர, குறிப்பால் உணர்வோரின் சிறப்பையோ, குறிப்பாலறிதல் பற்றிய சிறப்பையோ குறிப்பால் கூட உணர்த்தாத குறள்.

குறிப்பால் அறிவோர், அறிவால் மேம்பட்டவர் என்பது ஏற்கனவே சொல்லப்பட்டதே! ஒருவேள, வள்ளுவர் யாருக்காவது இருவரைக்காட்டி, எப்படி இருவரும் உருவால் ஒத்திருந்தாலும், அவருள் ஒருவார் குறிப்பால் உணரும், அறிவால் மேம்பட்டவர் என்று சொல்லியிருக்கலாமோ?

Transliteration:

kuRiththadhu kURAmaik koLvaRo DEnai

uRuppO ranaiyarAl vERu

kuRiththadhu – what others think or have in their minds

kURAmaik – even if they don’t reveal

koLvaRoD(u) – one who is able to read and understand

Enai – even if in other

uRuppOranaiyarAl – parts of body or form look similar to someone else

vERu – are different and definitely better than the other person

Another chapter filler verse! Though two persons may be looking similar in form or in parts, one who is able to read others mind and be able to understand, without their revealing, what is in their minds, is definitely superior in  intellect – is what is conveyed in this verse.

This verse seems to be an interpretation of the adage “All that glitters is no gold”  and another verse said for ascetics, “eppoRul eththanmaith thAyinum”. It does not specially or specifically say anything significant about the ability to read others mind itself, required of ministers.

It has been already said much in previous verse about such people are of evolved intellect. Perhaps vaLLuvar, could have, during one of his conversations, shown two people and compared how one was truly intelligent because of this ability.

“Though similar in form and looks, a person that reads others mind

 Without them revealing any, is superior and is of intellectual kind”

குறிப்பிற் குறிப்புணர் வாரை உறுப்பினுள்

யாது கொடுத்தும் கொளல்.

                        (குறள் 703: குறிப்பறிதல் அதிகாரம்)

குறிப்பிற்  - ஒருவரின் முகக்குறிப்பைக் கொண்டே

குறிப்புணர்வாரை - அவர் அகத்தில் குறித்ததை அறிவாரை

உறுப்பினுள்  - தம் செல்வத்துள்

யாது கொடுத்தும்  - ஏது கொடுத்தாகிலும்

கொளல் - தமக்குத் துணையாக்கிக் கொள்ளவேண்டும்

ஒருவர்தம் முகக்குறிப்பால் அவரது அகத்தில் உள்ளதை வெளிச்சமாக அறிந்துகொள்ளும் ஆற்றல் கொண்டவரை தமக்கு அருகிலேயே துணையாக தன்னுடைய உடமைகளில், எப்பொருள் கொடுத்தாகிலும் கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்கிறது இக்குறள். இது ஆள்வோர்க்கு, அவர்கள் கொள்ளவேண்டிய அமைச்சருக்கு இருக்கவேண்டிய குறிப்பறியும் திறனைச் சொல்லுகிறது. அகத்தின் அழகு முகத்தில் தெரியும் என்னும் பழமொழியின் குறள் வடிவமே இக்குறள். இரகசியங்களைக் காப்போர் மிகவும் உள்ளழுத்தமானவர்கள்.  அவர்களது முகக்குறிப்பைக் கொண்டோ, நடவடிக்களைக்கொண்டோதாம் அவர்கள் ஆற்றும் செயல்களை அறியவேண்டும். அவ்வாறு அறிதலைப் பற்றியதே இக்குறள்.

Transliteration:

kuRippiR kuRippuNai vArai uRuppinuL

yAdhu koDuththum koLal

kuRippiR – Looking at someone’s face

kuRippuNaivArai – those who know, what they have in their inside

uRuppinuL – Among all his possessions

yAdhu koDuththum – giving whichever would keep him (such perceptive mind)

koLal – and retain such insightful mind

A ruler must keep an insightfult reader of others minds, perceptive by looking at the others bodily signs, with him, giving whatever priced possession he has – so advices this verse, a ruler to select and retain insightful ministers with him. Though what the face shows is indicative of what is in somebody’s mind, only a shrewd person would be able to read that accurately. People that guard secrets are usually careful to conceal their thoughts. Only careful observation and deep insights into their behavior would reveal what they think in their minds. When such insightful minds, capable of unraveling complex and concealing minds are found, imperative it is for a ruler to as said in this verse.

“Whatever it takes to keep those who read others mind

 by their face, a ruler must do and keep as his rare find”
