உள்ளினேன் என்றேன்மற் றென்மறந்தீர் என்றென்னைப் 


புல்லாள் புலத்தக் கனள்.

                           (குறள் 1316: புலவி நுணுக்கம் அதிகாரம்)

உள்ளினேன் என்றேன் - உன்னை நினைத்தேன் என்று சொன்னேன் (உன்னருகே இல்லாதபோது)

மற்று என் மறந்தீர் - அப்போது என்னை நீர் மறந்திருந்தீரோ? ஏன் மறந்தீர்?

என்றென்னைப் புல்லாள் 
- என்றுசொல்லி என்னைத் தழுவாள்

புலத்தக்கனள் - என்னோடு ஊடுவாள்

நான் உன்னைவிட்டுப் பிரிந்திருந்த காலத்தில் உன்னை நினைத்தேன் என்று சொன்னேன். அதற்கு அவள் அதையே திரித்து பொருள் கொண்டு, அப்போது என்னை மறந்தும் இருந்த நேரமுண்டோ? ஏன் மறந்தீர் என்று கூறி, என்னோடு கூடி முயங்காது, ஊடிவிட்டாள். எப்படிப் பேசினாலும், அதிலும் உள்ளுறையாக எதிர்மறைப் பொருளைக் கொண்டு ஊடுகிறாளே என்று அங்கலாய்க்கிறான் காதற்தலைவன்

Transliteration:

uLLinEn enREnmaR RenmaRandIr enRennaip

pullAL pulattak kanaL

uLLinEn enREn – I had though about you (when I was away from you)

maRR(u) en maRandIr – Oh! Were there times you had forgotten me? Why?

enRennaip pullAL – saying so, she would not embrace me

pulattakkanaL – and began the love-quarrel (again)

I told her that I had thought about her, when I was away. Immediately she caught on to that and asked if I had forgotten then so that I had to think about her! Saying thus, she would not embrace me and engage in love-quarrel again. The maidens’ lover is worried that, whatever he says, she takes it in the negative sense to find a reason to be in love quarrel.

“I told her, I thought about her; and she asked if I had I forgotten her then?

 And saying so, she would not embrace me, and be in love-quarrel again!”
