அற்றார்க்கொன்று ஆற்றாதான் செல்வம் மிகநலம்

பெற்றாள் தமியள்மூத் தற்று.

                                    (குறள் 1007: நன்றியில்செல்வம் அதிகாரம்)

அற்றார்க்கு - செல்வமில்லா வறியோர்க்கு

ஒன்று ஆற்றாதான் - தம்மிடம் உள்ள செல்வத்தால் உதவி புரியாதவனுடைய

செல்வம் - செல்வமானது

மிகநலம் பெற்றாள் - மிகுந்த அழகும், வனப்பும், இளமையும் உடையவள்

தமியள் - தனியாக இருந்து (இல்லறத்தில் ஈடுபடாமல் இருந்து)

மூத்தற்று - முதுமை அடைந்தார்போலாம் (பயனிலா இளமையாய் கழிந்ததுபோலாம்)

பெண்ணின் இளமையும், அழகும் இல்லறமாகிய நல்லறத்தில் ஈடுபடாமல் பருவம் கழிந்து முதுமையடைந்து, வீணாவதுபோலாம். இல்லாதோர்க்கு, ஈந்து உதவாதவனுடைய செல்வம்போலாம். செல்வத்துக்கு முதுமையில்லைதான்; பயனில்லாது வீணாகக் கழிவதென்பது ஈந்து அதனால் மறுமைக்குத் தேவையான புண்ணியத்தைத் தேடிக்கொள்ளாதிருப்பது என்றே கொள்ளவேண்டும்.

Transliteration:

aRRArkkonRu ARRAdAn selvam miganalam

peRRAL tamiyaLmUth thaRRu

aRRArkku – for those who have not

onRu ARRAdAn – not helping with the wealth he has

selvam – that wealth is like

miganalam peRRAL – the beauty and the youth of a young woman

tamiyaL – living alone (without being married and leading a nice family life)

mUththaRRu – becoming old.

Like how a young maidens’ beauty, and youth are wasted to grow old without the blisss of leading family life, is the wealth of a someone who does not share or help the needy; As we have seen in many verses earlier without being charitable, the merit of being born in noble and virtuous families will not be there; having the wealth without knowing the joy of giving to others is indeed a wasted life.

“The rich with all his wealth being not charitable where needed

 is wasted like young maidens’ youth, beauty not being married”
