ஏதம் பெருஞ்செல்வம் தான்துவ்வான் தக்கார்க்கொன்று

ஈதல் இயல்பிலா தான்.

                                    (குறள் 1006: நன்றியில்செல்வம் அதிகாரம்)

ஏதம் - நோயே, குற்றம், பெரும் பாவம் என்று பலவாறாகப் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம்.

பெருஞ் செல்வம் - தேடி வைத்த பெருஞ் செல்வமும்

தான் துவ்வான் - தானும் துய்க்கமாட்டான்

தக்கார்க்கு - உதவி வேண்டி வாடியிருப்போர்க்கு

ஒன்று ஈதல் - ஏதேனும் ஈந்து உதவி செய்கின்ற

இயல்பிலாதான் - இயல்பும் இல்லாதவனுக்கு

சென்ற குறளின் கருத்தாக பயன் என்ன என்று கேட்டதையே இக்குறளில் இன்னும் வலிமையாக தகுதியுடையார்க்கு, உதவி வேண்டியிருப்போர்க்கு ஈதலும், தாமும் துய்த்தலும் இல்லார்க்கு அவர் சேர்த்துவைத்த பெருஞ்செல்வமும் நோயே என்று கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

ஒருவன் சேர்த்துவைத்த செல்வத்தை தமக்கும் தம்மனோர்க்கும் செலவு செய்வானேயானால் அவனுடைய செல்வம் சேர்த்த உழைப்புக்குப் பயனை ஓரளவேனும், இம்மையில் தருகிறது.  ஈந்து உவத்தலே இனிமையும் மறுமைக்குப் பயன் தருவதுமாம். அவ்வாறு சேர்த்த செல்வத்தை தகுந்தவர்க்கு ஈந்து   உவக்காதார்க்கு அச்செல்வத்தைக் காக்கின்ற கவலையே நோயாக மாறிவிடும். ஈயார் தேட்டை தீயார் கொள்வரன்றோ?

Transliteration:

Edam perunjchelvam thAnthuvvAn thAkkArkonRu

Idal iyalbilA dAn

Edam – Is a disease, infact even a crime and a grievous sin

Perunj chelvam – what one has amassed

thAn thuvvAn – never enjoys himself for his people

thAkkArkku – for those needy

onRu Idal – to show benevolence

iyalbilA dAn - not having in his nature.

Earlier verse had asked a general question as to what would be the use of accumulated wealth if somebody is neither enjoying it himself nor doing anything to the needy with it. This verse goes a step further and says, it is indeed a disease to have such wealth without the above said two uses.

If a person spends on himself and his people, he has enjoyed the fruits of his labor in this birth itself, which adds some meaning in the present birth. Like wise, being benovelnt has its own happiness - to see the smile in the needy being helped and gives an assurance of noble birth in subsequent births. Even the worry of protecting the wealth could become a disease for the person who owns and does not share. After all, unshared wealth can become the target of evil and that is a true worry.

It is nothing but disease to accumulate all that wealth
