கொடுப்பதூஉம் துய்ப்பதூஉம் இல்லார்க்கு அடுக்கிய
கோடியுண் டாயினும் இல்.
(குறள் 1005:
நன்றியில்செல்வம் அதிகாரம்)
கொடுப்பதூஉம் - பிறர்க்கு ஈந்துவத்தலும்
துய்ப்பதூஉம் - தாம் நுகர்ந்து மகிழ்வதும்
இல்லார்க்கு - செய்யார்க்கு
அடுக்கிய கோடி உண்டாயினும் - கோடி கோடியாய் செல்வம் இருப்பினும்
இல் - அதனால் ஒரு பயனும் இல்லை.
பிறர்க்கு ஈந்து உவக்கின்ற
மனமோ அல்லது தாமாவது நல்ல வழிகளில் அச்செல்வத்தை நுகர்தலோ இல்லையாயின், ஒருவருக்கு
கோடி கோடியாக செல்வம் குவிந்திருந்தென்ன பயனாம். அச்செல்வம் இருந்து இல்லாதது போலேயாம்.
Transliteration:
koDuppadUum thuyppadUum illArkku aDukkiya
kODiyuN Dayinum il.
koDuppadUum – Giving to other (being benevolent)
thuyppadUum – or enjoy the fruits of it
illArkku – those that have neither
aDukkiya kODiyuN Dayinum – even if they have stacks of wealth
il
– No use because of that.
Those that do not act benevolently towards others,
nor enjoy themselves with all the wealth they have stacked, there is no use in
their enormous wealth. It is as good as not being there.

despite the stacks of accumulated wealth,
When
not charitable nor enjoy it, is but useless filth”
