99: (Sublimity- சான்றாண்மை)

[This chapter is about sublimity – characterized by nobility, majesty, spiritual, moral and intellectual – all combined in one form. Here in one word, he talks about the awe inspiring and highly impressive qualities expected in people known as sublimity or சான்றாண்மை)

கடன்என்ப நல்லவை எல்லாம் கடன்அறிந்து
சான்றாண்மை மேற்கொள் பவர்க்கு.

                                    (குறள் 981: சான்றாண்மை அதிகாரம்)

கடன் என்ப - ஒருவருக்கு உரிய கடமையாவது

நல்லவை எல்லாம் - இவையெல்லாம் நல்லன, செய்யத்தக்கன என்னும்

கடன் அறிந்து - ஆற்றுதற்குரிய கடமையை அறிந்து
சான்றாண்மை -அவற்றை மேன்மையோடு செய்து

மேற் கொள்பவர்க்கு - ஒழுகுபவர்க்கு

சான்றாண்மை என்பது மேன்மையான குணங்களாம் உயர் பிறப்பு, ஆளுமை, இறை நோக்கு, ஒழுக்க நெறி இவற்றை ஒன்றே திரட்டியதாம். தமக்கு உரிய கடமைகள் இன்னவென்று அறிந்து, அவற்றை நல்லவையென்றும், செய்யத்தக்கன என்றும் அறிந்து ஆற்றும் இயல்பே மேன்மையான குணங்களை ஒருங்கே திரட்டிய சான்றாண்மை உடையவர்க்கு உரித்தாம்

Transliteration:

kaDanenba nallAvai ellAm kaDanaRindu

sAnRANmai mERkoL bavarkku

kaDan enba – What is rightful duty for a person is

nallAvai ellAm – knowing what is right and good to do

kaDan aRindu – understanding that’s their duty

sAnRANmai – with excellence

mER koLbavarkku - doing them exceedingly well

The word ‘chANRANmai” implies the amalgamation of all noble virtues such as nobility, oriented towards godliness, having the ability to take charge, and having impeccable character. Knowing what ther right duties that are appropriate to self, knowing them to be good and need to be done, diligently performing those duties belong to the people of such high sublime nature.

Sublimity is in knowing the duties meant for self to do

And delivering them with excellence, without much ado
