அற்றம் மறைக்கும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான்

குற்றமே கூறி விடும்.

                                    (குறள் 980: பெருமை அதிகாரம்)

அற்றம் - உண்மை (உண்மையிலே குற்றமோ குறையோ இருப்பினும்)

மறைக்கும் - அவற்றை மறைப்பர் (நிறையே காண்பர்)

பெருமை - நிறைமிக்க பெருமை மிக்கோர்

சிறுமைதான் - சிறுமைக் குணம் உள்ளோர்தான்

குற்றமே - நிறையைச் சற்றுக் காணாது, தேடித் தேடி குற்றங்களையும், குறைகளையும் கண்டு

கூறிவிடும் - கூறுவர்

சிறுபஞ்சமூலப் பாடலொன்று, இதே கருத்தை, “பிழைத்தல் பொறுத்தல் பெருமை - சிறுமை இழைத்ததீங் கெண்ணியிருத்தல்” என்று சொல்லும். பெரியோரான பெருமை மிக்கோர், பிறரிடம் குறைகள் இருந்தாலும் அவ்வுண்மையை மறைத்து, அவர்களைப் பற்றிய நிறைகளை மட்டுமே உரைப்பர். ஆனால் சிறுமதியினர், நல்லோரிடமும் குறைகளையே காண்பர் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில்.

உண்மையை மறைப்பதா? அதுவும் பெருமைக்குரியோர் என்ற கேள்வி எழுமல்லவா? அதற்காகத்தான் வள்ளுவர் முதலிலேயே, “பொய்மையும் வாய்மை யிடத்த புரைதீர்ந்த; நன்மை பயக்கு மெனின்” என்றாரோ?

Transliteration:

aRRam maRaikkum perumai siRumaithAn

kuRRamE kURi viDum

aRRam – Truth (in truth even if there are faults and blemishes)

maRaikkum – hides ( and find only good in anyone)

perumai – the people that are great

siRumaithAn – only low in character

kuRRamE – only fault in others (even in good people)

kURiviDum – will speak (of others faults only)

A poem in SirupanchamUlam reflects the same thought. Great people forgive others mistakes; only low characters remember only faults of others.  Truly great people, even if somebody has blemishes, would hide that truth and not indulge in badmouthing about them. Only people that are low in character shall indulge in badmouthing even the blemishless people.

A question may arise to how truth can be hidden! VaLLuvar has covered his bases well in an earlier verse saying that, “Even a lie is not wrong and is considered truth if it can cause good.

“Greatness will hide the truth of othes ill!

 Only the base will speak ill even when nil.
