சொல்லுக சொல்லைப் பிறிதோர்சொல் அச்சொல்லை

வெல்லுஞ்சொல் இன்மை அறிந்து.

                              (குறள் 645: சொல்வன்மை அதிகாரம்)

சொல்லுக - பேசுக (அமைச்சர்களுக்குச் சொல்லப்படுவது)

சொல்லைப் - பேசுகிற சொற்களை

பிறிதோர் சொல் - மற்றொருவர் பேசுகிற சொற்கள்

அச்சொல்லை - அவ்வாறு அமைச்சர் பேசும் சொற்களை

வெல்லுஞ் சொல் - வெல்லும்படியான சொற்கள்

இன்மை - அல்ல என்று

அறிந்து - தெரிந்து, உணர்ந்து.

ஓர் அமைச்சர் பேசக்கூடிய சொற்களானது, மாற்றாக மற்ற எவரும் ஒரு சொல்லையும் பேசமுடியாத அளவுக்கு பொருட் செறிவுடனும், செயலாற்றல் மிக்கதாகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து. இக்குறளே இக் கருத்துக்கு ஒரு தலை சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டாகவும் விளங்குவது தெளிவு. வள்ளுவரின் இக்குறட் சொற்களுக்கு மாற்றுச் சொற்கள் ஏதேனும் இருக்கமுடியுமா?

Transliteration:

Solluga sollaip piRidOrsol achchollai

Vellunjsol inmai aRindu

Solluga – speak (said specifically for people serving as ministers)

sollaip – such that the words spoken

piRidOr sol – what others speak

achchollai – the words of ministers

Vellum sol – win over (the words of ministers)

inmai – cannot (win over)

aRindu - knowing

The words uttered by a minister shall not have other contrary words that win over. Such shall be the power of articulation and the value of his words. Even this verse, stands as a testimony to such power. Who would argue against what is conveyed in this verse by vaLLuvar?

“Speak the words such that none

  Spoken by others can ever win”
