வேட்பத்தாஞ் சொல்லிப் பிறர்சொல் பயன்கோடல்

மாட்சியின் மாசற்றார் கோள்.

                        (குறள் 646: சொல்வன்மை அதிகாரம்)

வேட்பத் - இவர் பேச்சைக் கேட்கவேண்டும் என்று பிறர் விழையத்

தாம் சொல்லிப் - தாம் பேசுதலும்

பிறர் சொல் - மற்றோர் சொல்லும் சொற்களின் பயனைச் சொல்வோர் இன்னார் என்று கருதாது

பயன்கோடல் - அவற்றால் உறும் பயனைத் தெளிவதும்

மாட்சியின் - அமைச்சுத் தொழிலிலே

மாசற்றார் - குற்றமற்று இயங்குவோரின்

கோள் - உறுதிப்பாடு.

      

இக்குறள் குற்றமற்று அமைச்சுத்தொழிலைச் செய்வோரின் உறுதிப்பாடு என்ன என்பதைச் சொல்லுகிறது. அத்தகையோர் மற்றோர் விரும்பும் வகையிலே பேசுவர். இன்னார் என்று கருதாது பிறர் பேசுவதில் உள்ள குற்றங்களைக் களைந்து, கொள்வதைமட்டும் கொள்வர்.

ஏற்கனவே இக்குறளின் கருத்தையே அறிவுடைமை அதிகாரத்தில், “எண்பொருள வாகச் செலச்சொல்லித் தான்பிறர்வாய் நுண்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு”  என்ற குறளிலும் வள்ளுவர் சொல்லியிருப்பது நினைவுகூறத் தக்கது. அக்குறளின் கருத்தை வேறு சொற்களில் கூறுவதே இக்குறள்.  இதே கருத்தைக் கூறும் பழமொழிப் பாடலொன்ற்று உண்டு. அது, “கேட்பாரை நாடி, கிளக்கப்படும் பொருட்கண் வேட்கை அறிந்து, உரைப்பார், வித்தகர்”.

Transliteration:

vETpathtAm sollip piRarsol payankODal

mATchiyin mAsaRRAr kOL

vETpath – For others to desire to listen to

tAm sollip – of such articulation

piRar sol – regardless who says, when others say something

payankODal – only taking the substance, discarding undesirable

mATchiyin – one who is a minister

mAsaRRAr – and does his work flawessly

kOL – their resolves and carriage.

This verse talks about the resolve and carriage required of a minister who is flawless in work. For others to desire and listen, would speak, such ministers; they would also consider what others say, discarding what is not right and taking only what makes sense regardless who those others are.

Already another verse (“eNporuLa vAgach selachchollith tAn piRarvAi nuNporuL kANba daRivu”,) conveying exactly the same thought has been done in a different chapter of “having intellect”. Only the words are different.  A verse from Pazhamozi nAnUru (“kETpArai nADi kiLakkappaDum poruTkaN vETkai aRindu, uraippAr viththagar”) expresses the same thought

“A flawless minister would speak words for others to desire!

 Would listen to others if the essence of its purpose is higher”
