தாளாண்மை இல்லாதான் வேளாண்மை பேடிகை

வாளாண்மை போலக் கெடும்.

                            (குறள் 614: ஆள்வினையுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

தாளாண்மை இல்லாதான் - குன்றாத முயற்சி, விடாமுயற்சி இல்லாதவனுடைய

வேளாண்மை - வள்ளன்மை, பிறர்குதவும் எண்ணமானது

பேடி கை - வீரியமில்லா, வீரமில்லா கோழையின் (ஆணும், பெண்ணுமில்லா அலியனையர்)

வாள் ஆண்மை போலக் - வாள் ஏந்தி வீரனைப்போல் ஆண்மையாகக் காட்டிக்கொள்வது போல

கெடும் - வீணே, ஒரு பயனும் இல்லாதது

விடாமுயற்சி அற்றவனிடத்தில் இருக்கும் வள்ளன்மை குணமும், எண்ணமும், ஒரு அலியின் கையில் வாள் இருப்பதைப் போன்றே! இரண்டினாலும் பயனில்லை. சென்ற குறளின் கருத்தை ஒட்டியதே இக்குறளும். ஊக்கமும், முயற்சியும் அற்றோருக்கு, ஆக்கமாகிய செல்வம் வருவதில்லை. அதனால் வறுமையே இருக்குமாதலால், அவர் பிறர்க்கு உதவும் எண்ணம் இருந்தாலும் அது நிறைவேறாது. 

பேடி கையில் வாள் இருந்தாலும், கோழைத்தனம் இருப்பதால், அவன் வாள் வாளாயிருக்கும், பகையோடு பொருதச் செய்யாது என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து.

Transliteration:

thALANmai illAdAn vELANmai pEDikai

vALANmai pOlak keDum

thALANmai illAdAn – A person without persisten effort

vELANmai – his benevolence

pEDi kai – in the hands of hermaphrodite or a eunuch

vAL ANmai pOlak – having the sword (as if will have any use)

keDum – will be of no use

The benevolence of a person devoid of persistent effort is like a enuch adorning a sword as if it will be of any use. Neither is useful. Like said earlier, without effort there is no way to build wealth and without wealth to share, there is no act of benevolence, even if the thought is there.

Similarly, if a coward has a weapon in the hand, it will remain quiet and will not have the courage  to fight the adversaries – says this verse.

“Like the weapon in the hands of a coward

 Is the thought of benevolence of a laggard”
