தாளாண்மை என்னும் தகைமைக்கண் தங்கிற்றே

வேளாண்மை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

                            (குறள் 613: ஆள்வினையுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

தாளாண்மை என்னும்  - விடாமுயற்சி என்னும்

தகைமைக்கண் - உயரிய பண்பு உள்ளவரிடம்

தங்கிற்றே - மட்டுமே இருக்கும்

வேளாண்மை என்னுஞ் - பிறர்க்கு உதவுதல் என்னும்படியான

செருக்கு - மேன்மை

இக்குறள் மூலமாக விடாமுயற்சியின் பெருமையும் மேன்மையும் மீண்டும் உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது. விடாமுயற்சி என்கின்ற உயரிய பண்பு எவரிடம் உள்ளதோ, அவரிடமே பிறர்க்கு உதவுக்கூடிய மேன்மையும் பொருந்தியிருக்கும் என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லுங் கருத்து.  விடாமுயற்சியே ஆக்கத்தினை அளிக்கும் வல்லமை கொண்டது. ஆக்கம் கொண்டவர்க்கே அடுத்தார்க்கு உதவுவது சாத்தியமாகும், என்பதினால் வேளாண்மைக்குத் தாளாண்மை அவசியமாகிறது.

அடுத்து வரக்கூடிய குறளிலேயே விடாமுயற்சி இல்லாதவனது பிறர்குதவும் எண்ணமும், பயந்த கோழையிடம் அகப்பட்ட வாள்போல, வீணானது என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர் (தாளாண்மை இல்லாதான் வேளாண்மை).  சம்பந்தரும் ஆக்கூர் தாந்தோன்றி மாடத்தேவாரத்தில், “ வேளாளர் என்றவர்கள் வள்ளன்மையான் மிக்கிருக்கும் தாளாளர்” என்பர்.

Transliteration:

thALANmai ennum thagamaikkaN thangiRRE

vELANmai ennum cherukku

thALANmai ennum – people of persistent effort

thagamaikkaN – which is an elevated trait in a person

thangiRRE – will only have

vELANmai ennum – the thought to help others and the resulting

cherukku – noble pride

Through this verse, vaLLuvar hints at the greatness and the pride of persistent effort. Those that have the greate trait of persistent, relentless effort will have the noble pride to help others too. Only persistent effort gives wherewithal or wealth to help others. Hence one goes with another.

In the following verse also he highlights using the same words “vELANmai” and “tALANmai” to high light the greatness of persistent effort, by saying one who is trying to help other without persistent effort and accomplish his goals, is like a coward carrying a sword. In either case, the use is none.

“The noble pride of helping others comes

 where the great persistent effort shines”
