இன்பம் விழையான் வினைவிழைவான் தன்கேளிர்

துன்பம் துடைத்தூன்றும் தூண்.

                            (குறள் 615: ஆள்வினையுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

இன்பம் விழையான் - தனக்கென இன்பத்தைத் தேடிக்கொள்ளதவனும்

வினை விழைவான் - தன்னைச் சார்ந்தவர்களுக்காக தளராத முயற்சியில் வினையாற்றுபவனும்

தன்கேளிர் - தனக்கு உறவாயவர்களின் (ஆள்வோர்க்கு தம் குடிமக்களே உறவாம்)

துன்பம் துடைத்து - துன்பங்களைப் முழுதுமாக நீக்கி

ஊன்றும் தூண் - அவர்களைத் தன் கூரையின் கீழ் இருக்கத் தாங்கும் தூண் போன்றவர்.

தளராமுயற்சியும், தன் குடிகளுக்கான வினைகளை ஆற்றுவதில் கண்ணும் கருத்துமாக இருக்கும் ஆள்வோர், அவர்க்கு உறவும் சுற்றமுமாகிய குடிமக்களைத் தன் ஆட்சியென்னும் கூரையின் கீழ் தாங்கக்கூடிய உறுதியான தூண் போன்றவர் ஆவார்கள்.

கண்ணனும் கோவர்த்தன கிரியினை ஏந்தி தன் குடிகளைக் காத்தான் என்னும் புராணச் செய்தியும் இச்செய்தியைச் சொல்லுகிற உருவகம்தான்.

தூண் இயக்கமில்லாதது, தளராத முயற்சி என்பது இடைவிடாத இயக்கத்தைக் குறிப்பது. ஆனால் தூண் என்பது, மனவலிமை, உறுதியான நிலைப்பாடு இவற்றைக் குறிக்கவே இங்கு சொல்லப்படுகிறது. இக்குறளாலும், ஆள்வோர்க்குத் தேவையான பண்புகளில் ஒன்று வலியுறுத்தப்படுகிறது. இதைப் பொதுவாக “வினையே ஆடவர்க்குயிரே” என்று குறுந்தொகை( 135.1) வரி சொல்லும்.

Transliteration:

Inbam vizhaiyAn vinaivizhaivAn thankELir

Thunbam thuDaiththUnRum thUN

Inbam vizhaiyAn – not seeking any personal pleasures

Vinai vizhaivAn – always engaged in activities (for the welfare of his people)

thankELir – for his citizens that are his people

Thunbam thuDaithth(u) – removing their miseries

UnRum thUN – as a strong pillar of support

Relentless, and persistent in effort to protect his citizens, a ruler is like a strong pillar of support to his citizens to remove their miseries.

It is like Krishna holding the Govardhana mountain in his little finger to protect his citizens of Gokula from the misery of torrential pour. His duty was to protect his citizens in which he was persistent.

A pillar implies inaction, but the relentless effort is continuous action. The pillar alludes to the strong mind, firm stand in undertaken task, which are indicted by that reference. This verse also implies one of the important traits required of a ruler.

“Not caring for his personal pleasure,  engaged in persistent action,

 a ruler is like a pillar of support to his citizens, not losing his traction”
