uLLAttAr – Knowing he resides in your heart itself
kAdalavarAl – you lover
uLLinI – and knowing that fact already
yAruzhaich chERiy – in  whom are you searching for him
en nenju? – O! my heart?

O! My heart! Loved by you, your lover resides in your heart itself and you also know that fact already; but, then in whom are you looking for him – the maiden laughs at her heart. It is a situation when someone has butter in hand, but looking for ghee elsewhere, which is laughable.

“O! My heart! in who are you searching for your beloved
When you know well already he resides in your abode!”

Parind(u) – Not being remorseful about being away from me, and with concern
avar nalgAr – he would not be affectionate still
enRu Engip – so you crave
pirindavar pin – and behind his beloved who left her
selvAi pEdai – you would go, ignorant
en nenju – my heart.

O! my heart! Being remorseful about leaving me and feeling guilty, he still does not show his concern and shower love; he is such a stone-hearted man! When he is so, you dwell in self-pity and still go behind him O! heart of ignorant self, laments the maiden in love, complaining to her heart.

“Though he is not remorseful about leaving me and show affection,
you, O my Heart, of ignorant self, you go after him in love affliction.

kAmam viDuonRO nANviDu nannenjE
yAnO poREniv viraNDu

kAmam viDu onRO – Either let go off lust
nAN viDu – or left go my honour
nannenjE – my good heart protecting both in right proportion
yAnO poREn – I can’t bear that.
iv viraNDu – caught in between

Bharati requested almost two thousand years later, to the mother Goddess. “Either klll my lust or stop my breathing”. In this verse, the maiden requests her good heart that has kept both in balance so that her dignity would be kept to let off either lust or the honour.  Lust and honor are like fire and water. Unless they are in balace, whichever is predominant, would quell the other.

Her request shows that she is more inclined to let off honour for the sake of satisifying her lust as she is suffers the departure of her lover and pines his absence. A poem from Kuruntogai, shows a maiden who states that her honor was saving her all these days; but the lust is slowly inching its way to drive that and make her honor driven away.

“Either rid me off my honor or lust, O! My heart
I cannot endure the pain with both being part”

Transliteration:

kalandu (u)Narttum – With his amorous embrace, he would remove my wrath
kAdalark kaNDAR – seeing my lover
pulandu (u)NarAi – you would not think of your wrath (or forget)
poikkAivu – Now in pretense anger
kAiti – you display your wrath
en nenju – O! My mind.

O! My mind, when I was angered at him, he would, with amorous embrace, remove that; you would at least pretend to be angry and still would not be able to hold your pretense anger. Now, why are you again pretending to be angered at him? It is a wasted posture; so says the mainden to her heart!

“O! My heart, he would remove with his amorous embrace your pretense anger!
and you would remain so, for that; Now why again pretense and wasted banter ?”
