Pukkil amaindhinRu koLLo udambinUL
Thuchchil irundha uyirkku

Pukkil – an abode to reside
amaindhinRu koLLo – has not been attained?
udambinUL – Inside the body,
Thuchchil irundha – residing in a corner
Uyirkku – the soul

“Doesn’t the life that sticks to a corner of this body, have a permanent abode to park itself? – asks vaLLuvar in this verse. It is not a question here, but wonderment at the impermanence of the body. Since the body is impermanent, the soul it carries also does not have a permanent place. Even if it can be argued that when a body perishes, soul transcends to another life, we need to look at the question carefully.  It is about the permanence of abode for the soul too not its vagabond state.

Does n’t the soul that has a transient body to hide
Have a permanent abode for it to always reside?

uRanguvadhu pOlum – Like sleep is
sAkkADu - death
uRangi – after sleep
vizhippadhu pOlum – like being awake is
piRappu – being reborn

Indian thought stream has some very rare and unique ideas that we can proudly and sometimes not so proudly, call our own. One of them is based on the belief of birth and death cycle, attributed to good and sinful deeds. This explains nicely why in birth kids are of different social strata and also is used a tool to deter people from sinful deeds citing the repurcussions in later birth.

This verse compares death to sleep and birth to waking up. By saying waking up, rebirth is what is implied here. When we are in deep sleep, we are not aware of what goes around us, and don’t even know in which state our body is. It is the closest experience to being dead when we don’t know what happens around us.  But one can argue, only the people that are still alive do not know if the dead person knows or not, which may be true. But we can surmise based on what we observe in real world. By citing such a common happening in our lives, vaLLuvar makes an impactful argument for impermanence.

There is a flaw in the argument of saying if sleeping is death, then by inference, waking up is birth. When we wake up from sleep, we can recount past happenings as well as things planned for the new day and future, which is not the case, even when we are assumed to be reborn. How many of us even remember one thing that happened in our past birth or births? The only way we can even think that there was a past birth is based on the happenings of the present birth, especially when something unpleasant happens.

Death makes us forget everything and birth does not bring any memories from the past is the common observation. While birth may be a chance happening, death happens with certainty. Since the assertion of this verse is such a popular thought, literary works from nAlaDiyAr, maNimegalai and sIvagachinthAmaNi, have all used this idea in their works. nAlaDiyar says, it is just the time to blink an eye, when the death and birth happens. Sundarar thEvAram says, the birth is like waking up after sleep.  Manimekalai says, “It is true, that death for those that are born and birth for those are dead are like sleeping and waking up.

Just because other works have cited an idea again and again, we can’t accept them to be absolute and irrefutable truth. In that aspect, we may still have to ponder over this verse deeply.

Like the state of sleeping is death.
After sleep, being awake is rebirth

kuDambai thaniththuozhiya puLpaRan dhaRRE
uDamboDu uyiriDai naTpu

kuDambai – The egg shell
thaniththuozhiya – to be left behind as broken and used
puL- the bird
paRandhaRRE – like it  flies away (once the purpose of shell is over) is the
uDamboDu – with the body
uyiriDai – life’s
naTpu – friendship or relationship

This verse establishes the impermanence by citing the relationship of the life in this mortal coil, which is not permanent. When the purpose of the body is over the life leaves the body like the bird flies out of nest, leaving it once it has its wings. Papanansam sivan’s song KANavENDAmO, captures this thought in the lilting words, “ OTTaichchaDalam oDunga veRRelumbuk kUTTilirundhuyir OTTam piDikkum mun” . The way ParimElazhagar has interpreted this is based on how the bird leaves when it is time to leave the shell that protects it (not the nest). He says like the bird breaks open, leaving the shell broken, useless, is how the life force leaves the body and that’s how the friendship between the life and its bearer, the body is.  This has been a favorite theme of poets of philosophical bent for ages!

We may ponder over another thought related to this. The continuation of life force in the new enviroment is hinted here too. We all witness this when the life that is formed in a shell or mother’s womb is protected until it is time to emerge in to the world with its body. The new enviroment for that life is outside world. When the body’s purpose is over, it is ready to leave and hop in to, may be, an unknown new environment, into a new body. So this verse indirectly establishes the continuity of the soul, but the disengagement with the physical form when it is ready to move on. In otherwords, the impermanence is for the body and not for the soul.

The thought has been expressed in nAlaDiyAr and aganAnURu and many other moralistic and devotional literature.

The word “kuDambai” has been interpreted by Parimelazhagar and later commentators as egg; but that must have come only after the lexicon “Pinkalandhai niganDu”. The word has been used as a nest in most old tamil literary works. However both the nest and egg connote only a temporary abode of a life.

“Like the bird’s bond before wings, with the nest
is the bond of life with the mortal coil till its rest”
