Today’s kuraL verse is from aRauthuppAl – அறத்துப்பால் (Dharma) from the poRaiyudamai chapter. ‘Patience is the best virtue’ – easily said than practiced. In the fast paced world of today, almost everything needs, done yesterday.

Patience as a virtue, is virtually an extinct and a rare commodity in our racing world. The oft-quoted ‘poruthAr bhoomi aLvAr” (பொறுத்தார் பூமி ஆள்வார்), is almost never practiced anywhere.

The most used phrase of ‘en porumaikkum oru ellai undu’ (என் பொறுமைக்கும் ஒரு எல்லை உண்டு!), very often means a very short duration of 5 minutes at the best, before the fireworks begin. Our patience at home, with friends, society we move in, relationships, learning and work place is almost to the point accomplishing our needs, a self serving tool.

Mother earth is often cited as an example embodiment of patience.
We litter her, dig her, deplete her of her riches and resources use her for our, mostly selfish reasons. Human ego usally forgets the eco system where they have to live in and have to leave for the future generations. Despite that the mother earth continues to give her patience and letting us live.

Though the truth is that continued depletion will result in deprivation for the larger society, if not immediately, eventually! This kuraL alludes to the extent of patience one must exercise and makes it an exalted virtue that somebody can have.

agazvArai – those who dig (the earth)
thAngum – bears (those who dig)
nilampOla – like mother earth (usually, land, field, but here the mother earth)
thammai  igazhvArai – those who demean, debase, humiliate
poRuththal – to bear them with utmost forbearance, restraint, tolerance
thalai – is the best virtue.

In today’s world, will this really work? Hmm..! I am sure Valluvar has seen these traits in his times itself and that’s why he was compelled to write these verses. After all human mind and workings have been the same for centuries.

“Have the virtue of forbearance, for those who insult
Exemplified by mother earth as she is hollowed out”

Continuing with where I left off yesterday, the 2nd verse I was referring to is here.

Transliteration:

eppoRuL yARyARvAyk kETpinum apporuL
meypporuL kaNba dhaRivu

epporuL – whatever be the statement/assertion/accusation made on a subject
yAr yAr vAi kEtpinum – regardless who says it or how convincing/truthful it appears
apporuL – that subject’s (statement/assertion, sometimes accusations too!)
meipOrul – the true value ( the truth and personal motivations, biases behind statement/assertion/accusation must be considered)
kAnpadh(u) – inquiring, seeking, researching, understanding,realizing
aRivu – is the true wisdom in deciding/doing appropriate course of action (assumed meaning as this kuraL is under “arasiyal” - code of governance)

Wisdom is in deep inquiry of words and intentions
Not in trusting the lips that may utter for deception”

As I already mentioned, this verse seems to be more in the societal context than at the personal level. Though seems applicable and valid for everyone, it is more so for the persons that are in the position of power.

Remember the plight and fate of the Pandya king Neduncheziyan, in the story of anklet (Silappadikaaram)? Blind faith and following are not the ways of wise, but the deep inquiry and considered actions are!

Regardless how believable a source may be, still one must get all the facts straight and make a prudent decision. The men and women of power, must not only be just and wise, but appear to be so too.

When the questioning mind of Nakkeera could stand up against Lord Shiva to clarify the doubts, the position he took was, even if it was the GOD SUPREME, it must be answerable to genuine doubts and cannot take a stance from a high pedestal.

The same quote of “kaNNAL kANbadhum poi, kAdhAl kEtpadhu poI, thIra visArippadE mei” (கண்ணால் காண்பதும் பொய், காதால் கேட்பதும் பொய், தீர விசாரிப்பதே மெய்!) is relevant ad applicable here more in the context of external inquiry rather than internal inquiry.

Twin Tenets for life (Part 1):

Transliteration:
eppoRuL yARyARvAyk kETpinum apporuL
meypporuL kaNba dhaRivu

epporuL – whatever be the subject (not to be construed as objects)
eththanmaiththaayinum – regardless how it appeals or appears to our senses
apporuL – that subject’s
meipOrul – the true value ( the true origin of the concept of subject and the purposes there in)
kAnpadh(u) – seeking, researching, realizing
aRivu – is the true awareness, wisdom, jnana (ஞானம்)

The model code for true living is captured in essence, by the two verses in ThirukkuraL. Though they are seemingly same, they are from different chapters belonging to different main headings of Dharma (அறம்) and Artha (பொருள்). The first verse talks about “seeking” at a personal level, mostly for personal elevation and understanding the true nature of things around us. This kuraL comes under, the sub-heading of “thuravu” (renouncing).

At surface level, it is same as “All that glitters is not gold”. Regardless of how things appear to one’s eyes, only truthful seeking will reveal the true being. Here the word “poruL” (பொருள்), does not merely refer to the objects we visualize; It does refer to the concepts, theological and otherwise that we are fed with from the time, we are able to assimilate knowledge. The main purpose is to elevate the “self” as in “உள் ஒளி அடைதல்” (self realization). It does not debase the passed on knowledge but encourages, “Self will” to examine everything given to us – the essence of seeking. Anything that comes close to that is seeking the guidance of knowledgeable ones, and is talked about in “PeriyOrai thunai kOdal” (பெரியோரைத் துணைக் கோடல்).

As the popular tamil adage goes, “kaNNAL kANbadhum poi, kAdhAl kEtpadhu poI, thIra visArippadE mei”
The second tenet is from Arivudamai chapter under (porut pAL – Artha part). Can you guess what that kurAL is?

“Wisdom in any subject is in seeking the true nature
Not in what our eyes capture or mind’s conjecture”

As of the past Monday (2nd April), I wanted to do something useful in Facebook. So, a though crossed my mind to write my perspectives on ThirukkuraL. Though there are many commentaries on ThirukkuraL, I felt that there is a vacuum in giving interpretations based on experiences, observations and comparisons of similar sounding verses.  So, here I am trying to give my perspectives. The idea is to invite feedback on my attempt with the readers comments and compile them as the collective beauty in the eyes of beholders. Though, predominantly I will be writing in English for wider consumption, I will try and edit, this blog as I have time later to give Tamil word by word meaning.

Written on 2nd April:
So, friends online, here is  the voice of Thirukkural that I am planning to share with you all,  one a day at least. Last night, suddenly I woke up around 2pm and pondering over my friends and friendships and realized, how influential they have been in shaping my persona. Many a moments of wonder, bonding, fun, joy, bliss, sharing, caring and some times disillusions, disappointments and even deception. Barter friendships have come my way and have found a way to be out too.

Here is a dedication to friends allover.

kuraLin kural:

muga naga - the smile in the face
natpadhu - friendship (that shows a smile in the face)
natpandru - is not always to be construed to be true friendship
nenjaththu - In the heart
aga naga - gladness felt (in the heart)
natpadhu - friendship (that feels glad even when you think of the friend)
natpu - Such friendship is the true and lasting friendship.

Not the sheer smile on the face makes a friend sincere
But, that which makes the heart smile and rejoice is truly dear
