எழுதுங்கால் கோல்காணாக் கண்ணேபோல் கொண்கன்

பழிகாணேன் கண்ட இடத்து.

                           (குறள் 1285: புணர்ச்சிவிதும்பல் அதிகாரம்)

எழுதுங்கால் - விழியில் அஞ்சனம் தீட்டும்போது

கோல்காணாக் - தீட்டுங்கோலைக் காணாத

கண்ணேபோல் - கண்களைப்போல்

கொண்கன் - கணவரிடத்தில்

பழிகாணேன் - ஒரு குற்றமும் பார்க்கமுடியவில்லை

கண்ட இடத்து - அவனை அருகில் கண்டபோது.

பெண்கள் கண்ணுக்கு அஞ்சனம் தீட்டும்போது, தீட்டுகின்ற கோலைக் கண்களால் காணமுடியாது! ஏனெனில் அவை அவ்வளவு அருகில் இருக்கும். அதேபோல் கணவன் அருகிலிருக்கும்போது அவனுடைய குற்றங்களை நான் காணமுடிவதில்லை என்று தோழியிடம் தலைவி கூறுகிறாள். மைதீட்டும் கோலை கணவனின் குற்றங்களுக்கு ஒப்பாக கூறுவது மைதீட்டும் கோலின் கருமையை ஒட்டியே இருக்கவேண்டும். குற்றங்களை கருப்போடு ஒப்பிடுதல் சரிதானே.

புருவம் தீட்டுதலும், கண்ணுக்கு மையெழுதுதலும் சங்ககாலமோ அதற்கு முன்பிருந்தோ இருந்து வரும் பெண்கள் தங்களை அழகு படுத்திக்கொள்ளும் வழிகள்தாம் போலும்.

Transliteration:

ezhudunkAl kOlkANAk kaNNEpOl koNkan

pazhikANEn kaNDa iDattu

ezhudunkAl – When black pigment is applied to eyes

kOlkANAk –  not seeing the stick that applies

kaNNEpOl – like eyes (that do not see the applying stick)

koNkan - husband

pazhikANEn – his faults, I would not be able to see

kaNDa iDattu – when I see him in proximity.

When girls apply the blag pigment to their eyes to beautify them, they cannot see the stick that applies, because the stick is working on the eyes. Likewise, when my husband is in such close proximity, I would not be able to see his faults, says the maiden to her friend. Since the stick that applies the pigment would be black, its’ comparison to the faults of the husband seems right.

It seems, shaping of eyebrows and applying black pigment have been in existence as beautifying methods for women since the times of Sangam period or even before that.

Like the eyes would not see the stick that applies pigment

So, am I, when proximity, do not see faults of my husband”
