126: (Modesty lost  - நிறையழிதல்)

[By her conversations with her heart, as in previous chapter, the maiden in love, loses her self-control and modesty; reveals her inner, hidden desires for others to know, due to her extreme desire for her beloved.]

காமக் கணிச்சி உடைக்கும் நிறையென்னும்

நாணுத்தாழ் வீழ்த்த கதவு.

                           (குறள் 1251: நிறையழிதல் அதிகாரம்)

காமக் கணிச்சி - காமமாகிய மழு

உடைக்கும் - உடைத்துவிடும்

நிறையென்னும் - மாண் என்கின்ற

நாணுத் தாழ் - நாணமென்னும் தாழ்ப்பாளைப்

வீழ்த்த - நொறுக்கி

கதவு - கதவினை (மாண் என்கிற என்பதோடு படிக்கவும்)

பெண்ணின் நாணத்தால் ஆகிய தாழ்ப்பாளால் பூட்டப்பட்ட மாண்பு என்னும் கதவினை நொறுக்கி பெண்ணின் காமமென்னும் மழு (கோடாலி) உடைத்துவிடும் என்கிறது இக்குறள். இது நாணமும், நிறையும் அழியாது காக்கவேண்டும் என்ற தோழிக்குத் தலைவி இவ்வாறு கூறுவதாம்.

இக் கற்பனை பல சங்க இலக்கியங்களிலும் ஏற்கனவே செய்யப்பட்டதே!  அவற்றுள் சில:

“முலையும் மார்பும் முயங்கணி மயங்க

 விருப்பொன்று பட்டவர் உளம்நிறை உடைத்தென” (பரிபாடல் 6:20-21)

“காமக் கணிச்சியால் கையுறவு வட்டித்து” (பரிபாடல் 10:33)

“யாவனே யானு மாக அருநிறைக் கதவம் நீக்கிக்

 காவலன் நெஞ்சமென்னும் கன்னிமாடம் புகுந்து

 நோவவென் உள்ளம் யாத்தாய்” (சீவக சிந்தாமணி: 714)

 கம்பராமாயண, மிதிலைப் படலத்திலும் கம்பர் இதையே இவ்வாறு காட்சிப் படுத்துகிறார்.

 “பிறந்துடை  நலநிறை பிணித்த வெந்திரம்

  கறங்குபு திரியுமென் கன்னி மாமதில்

  எறிந்தவக் குமரனை”

Transliteration:

kAmak kaNichchi uDaikkum niRaiyennum

nANuttAzh vIzhtta kadavu

kAmak kaNichchi – the axe that the lust iis

uDaikkum – will break

niRaiyennum - modesty

nANut tAzh – shame, the door lock

vIzhtta – to goto pieces

kadavu – the door (it has to be read with modesty)

The door that modesty is, locked with the lock that sense of shame is, broken into pieces by the axe or hatchet of lust, says this verse. This is probably said the friend of the maiden to advise to preserve her sense of shame and modesty. This seems to be a popular imagination even during Sangam poets.  Works of ParipADal, Cheevaga ChintAmaNi, and even Kambar have said similarly.

“The axe of lust will break the door that modesty is

 locked with the bolt, the sense of shame into pieces”
