பிணிக்கு மருந்து பிறமன் அணியிழை

தன்நோய்க்குத் தானே மருந்து.

                        (குறள் 1102: புணர்ச்சி மகிழ்தல் அதிகாரம்)

பிணிக்கு மருந்து - மற்ற நோய்களுக்கு மருந்து

பிறமன் - வேறு உளவாம்

அணியிழை - அணிகலன்கள் பூண்ட அணங்கினால்

தன்நோய்க்குத்  - வந்த நோய்க்கு

தானே மருந்து - அவளே மருந்துமாவாள்.

மற்று நோய்களுக்கெல்லாம் வேறு பல மருந்துகள் உள்ளனவாம். ஆனால் அணிகலன்கள் பூண்ட அவ்வணங்கினால் உற்ற காதல் நோய்க்கு அவளே மருந்துமாவாள். காதல் என்னும் நோயும் அவ்வணங்காலேதான் வருகிறது; அதற்கு உற்றதோர் மருந்தாயும் அவளேதான் இருக்கிறாள் என்பதைச் சுவையாகச் சொல்வது.

இதை நற்றிணைப் பாடலொன்று இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது. “பெருந்தோட் குறுமகள் அல்லது மருந்துபிறி தில்லையான் உற்ற நோய்க்கே” !

மாயாசனகப் படலத்தில் வரும் கம்பனின் பாடல் வரிகள் இன்னும் அழகானவை!

“மந்திரம் இல்லை, வேறு ஓர் மருந்து இல்லை, மையல் நோய்க்குச்

சுந்தரக் குமுதச் செவ்வாய் அமுது அலால் அமுதச் சொல்லீர்!

Transliteration:

piNikku marundu piRaman aNiyizhai

tannOikkut tAnE marundu

piNikku - for other diseases

marundu piRaman – there are many medicines

aNiyizhai – the beautiful girl decorated with jewels

tannOikkut – for the love disease I have

tAnE marundu – only she can be a cure and medicine.

For other diseases there are different medicines. But for the love disease give by the bejeweled beautiful girl, only she can be a cure and medicine; here also the physical union is implied. Many literary works cite the same example of a girl being the medicine for love sickness for her lover. Kambar says, but for the sweet kiss from the beautiful red, “kumuda” flower like lips, of his lover there is neither a medicine nor a spell to cure the love sickness.

“There are a plenty of other medicines available for all other diseases

 For love sickness, given by bejeweled girl, she is the cure that eases”
