குறளின் குரல் - 1075

இரவுள்ள உள்ளம் உருகும் கரவுள்ள

உள்ளதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்.

                        (குறள் 1069: இரவச்சம் அதிகாரம்)

இரவு உள்ள - ஒருவர் தன் வாழ்வாதரத்துக்கா இரக்க வேண்டியதை நினைக்கும்போது

உள்ளம் உருகும் - உள்ளமானது நெகிழ்ந்துபோகும்

கரவு உள்ள - ஆனால் ஒருவர் செல்வத்தை மறைக்கும் கஞ்சர்களிடம் இரப்போரைக் கண்டால்

உள்ளதூஉம் - அவ்வுள்ளமும் நெகிழ்வதும்

இன்றிக் கெடும் - இன்றி அழிந்துபடும் நைந்து

இக்குறளும் வள்ளுவர் தம்மை முன்னிலைப் படுத்தி சொல்வதாகக்கொள்ளலாம். பிறர் தம் வாழ்வாதாரத்துக்காக இரந்து செய்வதைக் எண்ணிப்பார்த்தால் கருணயுள்ளம் கொண்ட ஒருவருக்கு உள்ளம் நெகிழும், உருகும். ஆனால், அப்படி இரக்கும் இழிநிலையிலும், அவர்கள் தம்செல்வத்தை ஒளித்துக்காக்கும் கஞ்சர்களிடம் இரக்கும் நிலையைக் நினைக்கும் போது, அவ்வுள்ளமே இல்லாது அழிந்து படும் நைந்து.

Transliteration:

iravuLLa uLLam urugum karavuLLa

uLLadUum inRi keDum

iravu (u)LLa – To think that some may have to beg for their living

uLLam urugum – the heart melts and cries out

karavu (u)LLa – To think they have to beg a miser who hides his wealth from beggers

uLLadUum – even that heart

inRi keDum –  will wilt and perish

Even this verse appears as if vaLLuvar directly says about how he feels. But it is true for any compassionate heart. To think that some may have to beg for their lively hood, the heart melts for them and cries out. But to think, that they may have to beg misers for their living, is even more painful for compassionate hearts for them to completely wilt and perish,

“ At the thought of begging for livelihood, compassionate hearts will melt;

  But to think they will do so with misers that hide their wealth, it will wilt”
