இரப்பன் இரப்பாரை எல்லாம் இரப்பின்

கரப்பார் இரவன்மின் என்று.

                        (குறள் 1067: இரவச்சம் அதிகாரம்)

இரப்பன் - யாசிக்கிறேன் (வள்ளுவர் தம்மையே முன்னிலைப் படுத்தி வேண்டுகிறார்)

இரப்பாரை எல்லாம் - பிறரை யாசிப்பவர்களை எல்லாம்

இரப்பின் - நீங்கள் அப்படி யாசித்துத்தான் ஆகவேண்டுமெனில்

கரப்பார் - தங்களிடம் உள்ளதை மறைக்கின்ற கருமிகளிடம்

இரவன்மின் என்று - தயைகூர்ந்து யாசிக்க வேண்டாமென்று

இக்குறளிலே வள்ளுவரே, தமது ஆக்கத்தைப் படிப்போர்க்கு வேண்டிக்கொள்வது போலே ஓர் அமைப்பு. இரப்பது இளிவருவது என்று, இழிவானது என்றும் ஓதிய பிறகு, அப்படி இரந்துதான் ஆகவேண்டுமெனில், தயைகூர்ந்து தங்களிடம் உள்ளவற்றை மறைக்கும் கருமிகளிடம் தயவு செய்து இரக்க வேண்டாம் என்று வள்ளுவர் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறார்.

Transliteration:

Irappan irappArai ellAm irappin

karappAr iravanmin enRu

Irappan – I beg you (vaLLur places him in the position of requesting the readers)

irappArai ellAm –Who ever seeks alms from others (begging)

irappin – if you must beg

karappAr – from the misers that hide what they have

iravanmin enRu – don’t beg them, please!

This verse sounds as if vaLLuvar himself requests all the listeners, not to beg from the misers that hide their possessions from the even deserving poor that would beg; After all, is it not demeaning to their pride if they beg such misers? – A simple verse  speaking about how despicable and dishonorable begging is from miser. Reminds us of the story of AuvvayyAr went seeking alms to a miser!

“Please, I beg of you, never beg misers that hide

 what they have; if you do, it is hurt to you pride”
