இலமென்று அசைஇ இருப்பாரைக் காணின்

நிலமென்னும் நல்லாள் நகும்.

                    (குறள் 1040: உழவு அதிகாரம்)

இலமென்று - எம்மிடத்தில் பொருளில்லை என்று

அசைஇ - தம்மிடம் விட்டு நகராது சோம்பி

இருப்பாரைக் காணின் - இருப்போரைக் கண்டால்

நிலமென்னும் - நிலமாகிய

நல்லாள் - மங்கை நல்லாள்

நகும் - எள்ளி நகையாடுவாளாம்

யாம் வறியர்; எம்மிடத்தில் பொருள் வசதியில்லை அங்கலாய்த்து, அதனாலேயே சோம்பித் திரிவோரைக் கண்டால், தன்னை உழவு செய்து உணவும், பொருளும் ஈட்டும் நிலையிலுள்ள ஒருவன் இவ்வாறு ஒன்றும் செய்யாது வாளா இருக்கிறானே என்று நிலமங்கை எள்ளி நகையாடுவாள் என்று சொல்லி இவ்வதிகாரத்தை நிறைவு செய்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

Transliteration:

ilamenRu asaiI iruppAraik kANin

nilamennum nallAL nagum

ilamenRu – We are poor, saying so

asaiI – without actively doing something about it, one that’s lazy

iruppAraik kANin – if such a person is seen

nilamennum – the earth

nallAL – that’s like a nice lady

nagum – will only laugh, mocking

We are poor; we have no means to do anything – saying so, some people keep quiet without doing anything to mend the situation. It is out of sheer laziness. Seeing such a person and thinking, a person that can something about it, the earth likened to nice lady, would only laugh mocking them – Saying such vaLLuvar concludes this chapter.

“The nice lady that land on earth is, would only laugh mocking

 if anyone is lazy and does n’t even fix their attitude, of flopping”
