ஏரினும் நன்றால் எருவிடுதல் கட்டபின்

நீரினும் நன்றதன் காப்பு.

                    (குறள் 1038: உழவு அதிகாரம்)

ஏரினும் நன்றால் - ஏர் கொண்டு உழுதலிலும் நன்றென்பது

எருவிடுதல் - பயிருக்கு தகுந்த உரமிடலாம்

கட்டபின் - களை நீக்கிய பிறகு

நீரினும் நன்றதன் - நீர்ப் பாய்ச்சுதலிலும் நன்றாம்

காப்பு - அப்பயிரைக் காவல் செய்து காப்பது

இக்குறளில் ஏர் கொண்டு உழுதல், உரமிடுதல், களை நீக்குதல், நீர்ப் பாய்ச்சுதல், மற்று விளைந்த பயிரை காவல் செய்து காத்தல் என்ற ஐந்து செயல்களையும் வரிசைப் படுத்தி அவற்றின் தேவையைக் கூறுகிறார். ஏர் கொண்டு உழுதல் நன்றுதான். அதையுவிட உரமிடுதல் நன்றாம். உரமிட்டால் மட்டும் போதாது, களை நீக்க வேண்டும். களை நீக்கினால் மட்டும் போதுமா? நன்கு வரப்புயர நீர்ப்பாய்ச்ச வேண்டும். இவ்வளவும் செய்து பயிர் விளைத்தபின், அப்பயிரைக் காப்பதற்காக காவல் செய்வதே மிக்க நன்றாம்.

இவ்வாறு பயிர் விளைவிக்கத் தேவையான ஐந்து கூறுகளையும், அவற்றை இன்றியமையாமையை ஏறுவரிசையிலும் கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில்

Transliteration:

Ernium nanRAl eruvidudal kaTTapin

nIrinum nanRadan kAppu.

Ernium nanRAl – More than ploughing it is important to

eruvidudal – fertilize the soil

kaTTapin – After removing all weeds

nIrinum nanRadan – irrigate the fields sumptuously; but more than that

kAppu – important it is to safeguard the bounty of crops

In this verse, vaLLuvar lists the five different tasks to be done in farming in their order of importance. They are ploughing, fertilizing, removing the weeds, irrigating, and finally safeguarding the crops, respectively. They are listed in the order of their importance. Cursory reading would make the verse to read as if the importance all tasks except the task of safeguarding the crops are underplayed.

The verse thus says: It is good to plough. But more than that, the soil has be to feritilized; More importantly, weeds need to be removed in the filed; More than that, proper irrigation is imperative for the good crops. Above all is safeguarding the bounty of crops from birds and other ways of losing it.

more than irrigating, imperative for the crops to be guarded”
