பலகுடை நீழலும் தங்குடைக்கீழ்க் காண்பர்

அலகுடை நீழ லவர்.

                    (குறள் 1034: உழவு அதிகாரம்)

பலகுடை நீழலும் - பலமன்னர்களது வெண்குடை நிழலுக்குக் கீழ் ஆளப்படுவோரும்

தங்குடைக் கீழ்க்காண்பர் - தம்மை ஆள்வோரின் வெண்குடை நீழலையே விரும்புவர்

அலகுடை - நெற்கதிர் பயிர்கள் விளைப்பதால்

நீழலவர் - உலகையே புரக்கும் கருணை நிழலை வழங்கும் உழவர் பெருமக்கள்.

“ஏரோட்டம் நின்னுபோனா உங்க காரோட்டம் என்னவாகும்” என்று பாமர மொழியிலே கேட்ட அண்மைக்கால கவிஞரை நினைவுறுத்தும் குறள். பொன் போன்ற நெற்கதிர் தரும் கருணை நிழலை உலகுக்கே வழங்குகின்ற உழவர் பெருமக்களால், எத்தனையோ மன்னர்களது வெண்குடைக் கீழ் ஆளப்படும் மக்களும், தம்மை ஆள்வோரின் வெண்குடை நீழலுக்கு கீழ் வருதலையே விரும்புவர்.

அலகு என்ற சொல் நெற்கதிரைக் குறிப்பதாம். “பொருபடை தரூஉம் கொற்றமும் உழுபடை ஊன்றுசால் மருங்கின் ஈன்றதன் பயனே”என்கிற புறநானூற்றுப் பாடல் வரிகளும், இக்குறளின் கருத்தை உணர்த்துவதைக் காணலாம்.

Transliteration:

pakuDai nIzhalum thangkuDaikkIzhk kANbar

alaguDai nIzha lavar

pakuDai nIzhalum – Even the people under the rule of other rulers

thangkuDaikkIzhk kANbar – would like to be ruled by their own ruler

alaguDai – those who produce paddy

nIzhalavar – and give a compassionate shade to the world, the farming community

A poet of recent times wrote a song for a movie, “what would happen to people that drive car, if the farmers plough drive stopped”. This verse reminds those lines.  Even people that are ruled by other rulers would desire to come under the protective shade or guard of farmers’ rulers that compassionately grow paddy for the world.

The word “Alagu” refers to “sheaf of paddy grain”.  A puranAnURRu verse says, even the rule guaranteed by a protective army is what gifted by the plough of the farmers, a similar thought as expressed in this verse.

“The compassionate shade of a farmers’ abundant produce

Even brings people of others rule under his shade-profuse”
