நகையுள்ளும் இன்னா திகழ்ச்சி பகையுள்ளும்
பண்புள பாடறிவார் மாட்டு.

நகையுள்ளும் - நகைப்புக்குள்ளாகும்
இன்னாது - துன்பத்தைத் தருவதாகும்
இகழ்ச்சி - இகழ்ச்சி என்பதால்
பகையுள்ளும் - பகைமை இருப்பினும் (அவர்களிடத்திலும்,
அதைச் செய்யாது - உள்ளுரை)
பண்புள - இனியவாகிய பண்பே இருக்கும்
பாடறிவார் மாட்டு - அத் துன்பத்தின் வீச்சத்தை அறிந்தவர்களிடத்தில்
இகழ்ச்சி என்பது பிறருடைய நகைப்புக்கு உள்ளாக்கும் துன்பம்
என்பதால், பகையுள்ளமே கொண்டிருந்தாலும் இனிய பண்புகளே விஞ்சி நிற்கும், அத்துன்பம்
எத்தகையது என்று அறிந்த பண்புடையோரிடத்தில்.
இக்குறள் சொல்லப்பட்ட வழியிலே பொருள் செய்வது சற்று கடினமானது.
பரிமேலழகர் உரையிலே “விளையாட்டுக்காக என்றாலும்” இகழ்ச்சி துன்பமுடையது என்று கூறுகிறார்.
இது முற்றிலும் அவராகக் கொண்டு கூட்டியதாக இருப்பினும், பொருள் பொதிந்த ஒன்றே. அதன்
காரணமாகவே, அத்துன்பம் எத்தகையது என்று உணர்ந்த இனிய பண்புடைமையே உள்ளவர்கள், ஒருவர்மேல்
பகையே கொண்டிருந்தாலும், அதை அவ்வாறு செய்யார் என்ற உரை பொருந்துகிறது.
Transliteration:

nagaiyuLLum –
will subject to ridicule
innAdu –
that’s painful is
igazhchi –
reproach, rebuke
pagaiyuLLum –
even to enemies (won’t do the same to them – implied meaning)
paNbuLa –
will be courteous
pADaRivAr
mATTu – those who understand such pain
Rebuke is redicule and painful; understanding that,
courteous people won’t even do that to their enemies, says this verse.
The verse is rather difficult to interpret as
written. Parimelazhagar in his commentary has added an implied phrase - “even
if done as a sport!”, to explain it better, perhaps, his own interpretation!.
However, it is meaningful and has helped other commentators. Only people of
virtue of courtesy would not rebuke even their enemies, says this verse.
