பணியுமாம் என்றும் பெருமை சிறுமை

அணியுமாம் தன்னை வியந்து.

                                    (குறள் 978: பெருமை அதிகாரம்)

பணியுமாம் என்றும் - பணிவுடைமை என்னும் பண்பினை என்றும் கொண்டொழுகுவர்

பெருமை - உண்மையில் பெருமை உடைய மேலோர்

சிறுமை - கீழோர், தாழ்வான எண்ணங்களையும் செயல்களையும் கொண்டவர்கள்

அணியுமாம் - தமக்குத் தாமே புகழாரம் சூட்டிக்கொண்டு

தன்னை வியந்து - தம்முடைய சிறு செயல்களையும் வியத்தகு சாதனைகளாகக் கொள்ளுமாம்.

உண்மையானப் பெருமை உள்ளோர்கள், சாதனையாளர்கள், பணிவென்னும் அடக்கம் உள்ளவர்கள். தங்களுடைய பெரிய சாதனைகளைக் கூட வெளியில் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள். ஆனால் ஒன்றுக்கும் உதவாத செயல்களையும் கூட உலகளாவிய சாதனைகளாக் வியந்து கருதி தமக்குத்தாமே புகழாரம் சூட்டிக் கொள்ளுவர் கீழோர்.

எல்லார்க்கும் நன்றாம் பணிதல் என்று ஏற்கனவே அறத்துபாலின் அடக்கமுடைமை அதிகாரத்தில் பணிவின் பெருமையை வள்ளுவர் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளதை நினைவுகொள்ளலாம்.

உலகத்தில் நாம் இன்று காணும் இவ்வுண்மையை அன்றே படம் பிடித்துக் காட்டியதுதான் வள்ளுவரின் பெருமை. சுய விளம்பரங்களும், சுவரொட்டி ஆடம்பரங்களும், பாராட்டி கொடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் பட்டங்களும், மலர் மகுடங்களும், அதற்கு துணையாகும் பலரது செயல்களாகிய அவலங்களைத்தான் வள்ளுவத்தினை ஓவியமாகத் தீட்டியவர்களும், பேச்சிலும் எழுத்திலும் மேற்கோளாகக் காட்டுபவர்களும் செய்வது.

Translliteration:

paNiyumAm enRum perumai siRumai

aNiyumAm thannai viyandu

paNiyumAm enRum – They will uphold virtue of humility

perumai – those that are truly glorious

siRumai – people of lowly thoughts and deeds

aNiyumAm – will wear self-gloating praises

thannai viyandu – wondering about their near to nothing accomplishment

People of true glorious accomplishments have humble demeanor. They will not even mention of their accomplishment to show off their greatness ever to others. It is for others to observe and wonder. But the people of lowly thoughts, deeds and conduct will incessantly be bloated in vainglory and would give themselves all the accolades as if they have done exemplary accomplishments.

It is good to recall that VaLLuvar has already stressed humility as the virtue for everyone, in the chapter on Humiity earlier.

This verse makes so much sense in todays’ world of vainglory, arrogated self-praise with wall posters, banners, cutouts, flower ornamentations, solicited honorary doctorates, and other forms of self-glory, desired by even those who speak and write about vaLLuvar’s great work. Perhaps, vaLLuvars’ period also had such vainglorious people.

“Vainglory is the way of lowly in thoughts and deeds

 Humility is what sprouts out of truly glorious seeds”
