தன்னலம் பாரிப்பார் தோயார் தகைசெருக்கிப்

புன்னலம் பார்ப்பார் தோள்

                              (குறள் 916: வரைவில் மகளிர் அதிகாரம்)

தன்னலம் - தம்முடைய புகழ் (அறம் மற்றும் ஒழுக்கம் கூடியதால் ஏற்படுவது)

பாரிப்பார் - பரப்புதற்குரிய ஒழுக்கச் சீலர்கள்

தோயார் - தீண்டார்

தகைசெருக்கிப் - தமக்கு தகைமை என்னும் அழகு, ஆடல், பாடல் இவற்றை வெளிப்படுத்தி

புன்னலம் - இழிவாக விலைப்பொருளாக்கிய அழகாம்

பார்ப்பார் - பரத்தையரின்

தோள்- அழகு தோள்களை

விலைமாதருக்கு அவர்களுடைய முதலீடு என்பது அவர்களது அழகு, அவர்கள் பிறரை மயக்குதற்கு வெளிப்படுத்தும் ஆடல், பாடல் திறமைகள். அவற்றை வைத்து தங்களுடைய வயிற்றை வளர்ப்பதோடு, மற்ற வாழ்க்கை வளங்களையும் கொள்ளும் விலைமாதருடைய அழகுத்தோள்களினை, அறம் மற்றும் ஒழுக்கத்தால் ஏற்படும், புகழ் பரவுவதையே விரும்புகிற சீலர்கள் தீண்டமாட்டார்கள், என்கிறது இக்குறள்.

கடந்த இரண்டு குறள்களிலும் காணப்பட்ட பொருளே, எனினும், இதில் அருள் பொருள் தேடும் அருளாளர்களை முதலிலும், அடுத்ததாகக் கற்றறிந்த சான்றோர்களையும், இக்குறளில் புகழுக்காக ஒழுக்க சீலத்தைப் போற்றுபவர்களையும் கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

Transliteration:

thannalam pArippAr thOyAr thagaiserukkip

punnalam pArppAr thOL

thannalam – glory due to virtuous and disciplined conduct

pArippAr – such disciplinarians

thOyAr – will not touch

thagaiserukkip – showing off their so called assets of beauty, dance and music

punnalam – the cheap physical pleasures offered by them

pArppAr – prostituting women

thOL – their beautiful shoulders

Prostituting women think of their beauty, their abilities to dance and sing as assets to win men to fend for themselves as well as prosperity in their lives. Men that seek glory with their virtues and disciplined conduct, shall not be attracted to such women of beautiful shoulders, says this verse.

Though, the same thought is expressed in the past two verse too, it addresses three different types of men, first, about the men seeking godliness, the second, about learned and the present verse about men keen on glory of good conduct and virtues..

“Men seeking glory of their good virtues, and good traits

shall not refuge in shoulders of cocottes, be in any straits”
