மனத்தின் அமையா தவரை எனைத்தொன்றும்

சொல்லினால் தேறற்பாற்று அன்று.

                        (குறள் 825: கூடாநட்பு அதிகாரம்)

மனத்தின் - உள்ளத்தினால்

அமையாதவரை - உண்மையாக நட்பு கொள்ளாதவரை (மேல்பூச்சான நட்புறவில் இருப்பவரை)

எனைத்தொன்றும் - எச்செயலிலும்

சொல்லினால் - அவர் கூறுகின்ற சொற்களினால்

தேறற்பாற்று அன்று - நம்பி செய்தல் கூடாது.

எச்செயலைச் செய்தாலும், உள்ளார்ந்த நட்புறவு ஒழுகாரின் சொற்களை, அவர் சொல்லுகின்றவாரே கொள்ளுதல் முறைமையல்ல. உள்ளார்ந்த நட்பில்லாதவர்களின் சொற்களில் உண்மையான அக்கறையைவிட வஞ்சமே மிக்கிருத்தலுக்கான வாய்ப்புகள் மிகுதி. நட்பைப் பொருத்தவரை, கூடா நட்பாயவரை, அவர் சொல்லுகின்ற சொற்களை நம்பி செயலில் இறங்குதலை விலக்குதலே அறிவுடைமை என்பதைச் சொல்லும் குறள்.

Transliteration:

Manaththin amaiyA dhavarai enaiththonRum

sollinAl thERaRpARRu anRu.

Manaththin – in heart

amaiyAdhavarai – a person who is not in truthful, trustworthy friendship

enaiththonRum- in any deed

sollinAl – believing that person’s words

thERaRpARRu anRu – never plunge in to do.

Never indulge in anything, believing the words of a person that’s not in truthful friendship and hence is not trustworthy, says this verse. Such untrustworthy façade friendship may have only ill-meaning intentions, and hence it is prudent to avoid whatever they say.

“Do nor trust the words of a façade pal

 That friendship is not from heart after all”
