பகையகத்துப் பேடிகை ஒள்வாள் அவையகத்து

அஞ்சு மவன்கற்ற நூல்.

                        (குறள் 727: அவை அஞ்சாமை அதிகாரம்)

பகையகத்துப் - பகைவர்க்கு முன்னர் இருக்கும் (அஞ்சுவது உணர்த்தப்பட்டது)

பேடி கை - பெண்தன்மை மிகுந்த ஆண், அல்லது அலியின்

ஒள் வாள் - வீர வாளானது, படைக்கருவி

அவையகத்து - கற்றோர் அவையிலே

அஞ்சுமவன் - பேசுதற்கு அஞ்சுகின்றவன்

கற்ற நூல் - கற்று தேர்ந்த நூல் போன்றாம் (இரண்டாலும் பயன் இல்லை)

பகைவரிடம் இருக்கும்போது, அவரைக் கண்டு நடுங்குகின்ற பெண்தன்மை கொண்ட ஆண்கள் (அலிகள்) கையில் இருக்கும் வீரத்தைக் காட்டும் படைக்கருவியானது, கற்றோர் நிறைந்த அவை முன்பாக பேசுவதற்கு அஞ்சுகிற கற்றோன் கற்று தேர்ந்த நூல் போலாம். இரண்டினாலும் உறுபயன் ஒன்றுமில்லை.

ஆண் தன்மை கொண்ட பெண்களைப் பேடன் என்பர். அவர்கள் வீரத்தை விரும்புகின்றவராக இருப்பர். மகாபாரதத்தின் சிகண்டி அதற்கு ஒரு எடுத்துக்காட்டு. பேடி என்று சொல்வதால் பெண்மையை விரும்புகிற ஆண்கள் எல்லோரும் கோழைகள் என்பதும் தவறான அனுமானம். பெண்களிலும் வீராங்கனைளை இலக்கியங்கள் பேசுகின்றன. தமிழர்கள் தவறாது பெண்களின் வீரத்துக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாகச் சொல்லுவது, “புலியை முறத்தால் அடித்து விரட்டிய தமிழ் மறப்பெண்ணைப்” பற்றியல்லவா?

Transliteration:

Pagaiyagaththup pEDikai oLvAL avaiyagaththu

Anju mavankaRRa nUl

Pagaiyagaththup – put before the enemies field

pEDi kai – in the hands of an hermaphrodite

oL vAL – valiant sword (it is useless)

avaiyagaththu – in the assembly of scholars

Anjum avan – that one who fears to speak up

kaRRa nUl – the scriptures and books he has studied (again it is useless)

The valiant sword in the hands of a hermaphrodite who is put in the middle of enemies is useless. Similarly, scriptures and books of any form of knowledge are useless for a deeply-studied person, that cannot speak and express his thoughts in the middle of scholarly assembly.

The common word hermaphrodite used for both forms of transgenders imply males having female qualities or females having male qualities.  The SikhanDi of MahAbhAratA was born a female and became a male to kill Bheeshma and was indeed depicted as a valiant hero in the epic. It is wrong to assume females are not valiant. After all tamil culture boasts of valiant females that drove even tigers with sifting pan and the pages of history have many a female warriors; so it is wrong to make blanket statements that females are less valiant. Regardless the verse conveys the wrong tools in the hands of wrong people.

“Erudition of that who is fearful to speak in the assembly of scholars is useless

 Likewise a sword in the hands of hermaphrodite amidst enemies is as useless.”
