அளவளா வில்லாதான் வாழ்க்கை குளவளாக்

கோடின்றி நீர்நிறைந் தற்று.

                             (குறள் 523: சுற்றந்தழால் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

aLavaLA villAdAn vAzkkai kuLavaLAk

kODinRi nIrniRain daRRu

aLavaLAv(u) – To converse freely to share what is in mind

illAdAn – one without close associates

vAzkkai – his life

kuLavaLAk – the water holding public tank

kODinRi – without the boundary or banks built to hold the water inside

nIr niRaindaRRu – is like filled with water

When there is no close associates (kindred) to converse with freely, frankly and intimately to share all good and bad things, a persons wealth would be dried up or misused just like a water in a public tank without safeguarding banks is misused by any passerby. Though the verse does not directly convey the meaning, and even confusing for casual readers, the implied meaning is this: Only when a person has kindred that he or she can talk to freely sharing their woes or otherwise, they would be given caring suggestions and be taken care of, by them. Otherwise, it would be like  a water tank without proper banks to safeguard.  Any and every passerby would simply use it for their own gains, good or bad.

When lack the kindred for intimate, free and frank conversations

A person would be misued like a public watertank without banks

தமிழிலே:

அளவளாவு - மனம் கலந்து பேசிட

இல்லாதான் - (சுற்றம்) இல்லாதவனுடைய

வாழ்க்கை - வாழ்க்கையானது

குளவளாக் - குளப்பரப்பானது

கோடின்றி - கரையில்லாமல்

நீர் நிறைந்தற்று - நீர் நிறைந்து இருப்பதுபோலாம்

மனம் விட்டுப் பேசி, கலந்து ஆலோசைனை செய்திட சுற்றம் என்னும் நெருக்கமானவர்கள் இல்லாதவனுடைய வளங்கள் எல்லாம், கரையற்ற குளத்து நீரைப்போல காணாது சென்றுவிடும். வந்தவர்களெல்லாம் தங்கள் பயனுக்குக் கொண்டு, நீரை இறைத்தோ அல்லது அசுத்தமாக்கியோ அதனை ஒருவருக்கும் பயன்படாத வகையாக்க்கிவிடுவர். நெருங்கிய சுற்றம் ஒருவனுடைய நலங்களைப் பாதுகாக்கும் அரிய ஆலோசனைகளை வழங்கும். அச்சுற்றம் எப்படி நெருங்கியதாகும்? ஒருவன் அவர்களோடு மனம்விட்டு கலந்து பேசி தன்னுடைய நலன்கள், குறைகள், விருப்பங்கள் இவற்றைப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டால்தான் அவர்களும் நெருக்கமானவர்களாக உணர்வார்கள்.
