எய்தற் கரியது இயைந்தக்கால் அந்நிலையே

செய்தற் கரிய செயல்.

                          (குறள் 489: காலமறிதல் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

Eidhar kariyadhu iyaindhakkAl annilaiyE

seydhaR kariya seyal

Eidhark(ku) – To get

ariyadhu iyaindhakkAl – a rare time and its window has come

annilaiyE – making use of that precious opportune moment or window of time

seydhaRk(ku) ariya – rare and difficult to do

seyal – must be done

There is a Tamil adage that is equivalent to the maxim, “make hay while the sun shines”.  This verse stresses the same thought. One must wait for the right or ripe moment to venture into things. When such moment arrives, the rare and important things must be done without procrastination. Letting go of the moment and lament is like letting the rope that keeps the cow in control and instead trying to hold the tail (which will only help the cow to have control).

So, this verse stresses that apart from waiting for appropriate time, one must also do the most difficult and rare to accomplish. Though there is no room for two different opinions here, the new verses written below are two in number, one stressing the deed in 2^nd person and the otherone saying for the difficult things the when right moment arrives that would be the best to avail!

“When the difficult to get precious moment arrives,

 Must do without fail to cross those difficult miles”

தமிழிலே:

எய்தற்கு - கிடைப்பதற்கு

அரியது இயைந்தக்கால்  - அரிதான தருணம் வாய்க்கும் போது

அந்நிலையே - அத்தருணத்தை பயன் படுத்திக்கொண்டு

செய்தற்கரிய - செய்வதற்கு அரிதான செயல்களை

செயல் - செய்து முடிக்கவேண்டும்

“காற்றுள்ளபோதே தூற்றிக்கொள்” என்று சொல்வதைப் போன்ற குறள்; ஒருவர் பொதுவாக தமக்கு வாய்க்கக்கூடிய தருணம் சரியாக இருக்க காத்திருக்க வேண்டும். அப்படி அரிய ஒரு தருணம் கிடைக்கும் போது, செய்வதற்கு அரிதான செயல்களை அப்போதே செய்து முடிக்கவேண்டும். நேரத்தைக் கடக்கவிட்டு பின்னர், “தும்பை (மாட்டைக் கட்டும் கயிறு) விட்டு வாலைப் பிடித்தால்” அரிய வாய்ப்பை நழுவ விட்டதற்கு வருந்த நேரிடும்.

காலம் வரும் காத்திருப்பதோடு மட்டுமில்லாமல், காலம் வந்த போது, கடிது காரியமாற்ற வேண்டுமென்பதை வலியுறுத்துகிற குறள்.  இருவேறு கருத்துக்களுக்கு இடமில்லாத குறள். ஆனாலும், இரண்டுவிதமாக இதை புதுக்குறள்கள் சொல்கின்றன. முதற்குறள் “காலம் வந்ததும் தவறவிடாமல் செய்க” என்று வலியுறுத்தும் பொருளிலும், இரண்டாம் குறள், “அரிய நேரம் வந்தபோது அதுவே அரியன செய்ய உகந்த நாள்” என்றும் கூறுகின்றன.

உற்றநாள் வாய்ப்பதரி தாகையால் ஆற்றரிய

முற்றும் முயன்றுவந்நா ளே 

(உற்ற நாள் வாய்ப்பது அரிதாகையால், ஆற்று அரிய முற்றும் முயன்று அந்நாளே)
