குறளின் குரல் - 467

நல்லினத்தி னூங்குந் துணையில்லை தீயினத்தின்

அல்லற் படுப்பதூஉம் இல்.

                      (குறள் 460: சிற்றினம் சேராமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

Nallinaththi nUnguth thuNaiyillai thIyinaththin

allaR paDuppathUm il

Nallinaththin Unguth – None like the companionship of good people

thuNaiyillai – comes as a help

thIyinaththin – Like the bad company

allaR – menace, nuisance

paDuppathUm – that creates

il – there is none

This verse is similar sounding to what we have already seen in the chapter on insisting virtue: “aRathtinUngu Akkam illai athanai maRaththalin Ungillai kEDu”. Instead of virtue, the words for good and bad company have been used here. Another verse where the meaning is very obvious and simple too.

There is no other help better than being in the company of learned, ethical elders.  Similarly there no worse harm than being the company of bad either. A nAlaDiyAr verse says” If we are in the company of learned that understand what is in our mind and help us accordily, we have happiness. On the other hand, if we keep the company of idiots that can not do so, only harm will surround us which will go away, if we get rid of such company.

“None is more menace than the company of bad,

Like none better help than the company of good”

தமிழிலே:

நல்லினத்தினூங்குந் - நல்லவர் சேர்க்கையை விடவும் மேலான

துணையில்லை - துணையாக வருவது ஒன்றுமில்லை

தீயினத்தின் - அதேபோன்று தீயவர்களின் சேர்க்கையவிட

அல்லற் - துன்பம்

படுப்பதூஉம் - விளைவிப்பதும்

இல் - வேறு இல்லை.

அறன் வலியுறுத்தல் அதிகாரத்தில் படித்த, “அறத்தினூங்கு ஆக்கம் இல்லை அதனை மறத்தலின் ஊங்கில்லை கேடு” என்ற குறளைப் போன்றதே இக்குறள்.. அறத்திற்கு பதில் நல்லினம், தீயினம் இவை பயன்பட்டிருக்கின்றன.  இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் ஈற்றுக்குறள், உள்ளங்கை நெல்லிக்கனி போன்றதே! எளிமையான கருத்து.

ஒருவருக்கு நல்லோர், பெரியோர் இனத்தைச் சார்ந்திருப்பது போல துணையாயிருப்பது வேறு எதுவுமில்லை. அதேபோல, தீயோரைத் தம்மினமாகக் கொண்டு ஒழுகுதலைப்போல துன்பத்தைத் தருவதும் வேறு எதுவுமில்லை. இக்கருத்தினை ஒட்டிய நாலடியார் பாடல் இது:

உணர உணரும் உணர்வுடை யாரைப்

புணரிற் புணருமாம் இன்பம் புணரின்

தெரியத் தெரியும் தெரிவிலா தாரைப்

பிரியப் பிரியுமாம் நோய்.   

நாம் மனத்தில் நினைத்தைக் குறிப்பால் உணரும் அறிவாற்றல் உடையோரை நண்பராகக் கொண்டால் இன்பமும், நமது எண்ணங்கள் வெளிப்படையாகத் தெரிந்தாலும், உணராத அறிவற்றோரை நண்பராகக் கொள்வோமானால், துன்பமும் உண்டாகும்; அத்துன்பமும் அத்தகையோரை விட்டுப் பிரிந்தால் தானே நீங்கும்.

தீயவரின் கூட்டுமிகு தீமையே - நற்றுணையாம்

தூயநல்லோர் தம்மோடு கூட்டு
