அதிகாரம் 20: பயனில சொல்லாமை (Restraint from useless talk)

[This chapter is about restraint from useless talk.  Speaking uselessly which have no virtues, values and wealth from virtues,  must be avoided by everyone. Lies, speaking ill of others, angry words and useless talk are all the usual faults that can come out of the faculty of speech.  Words which are of no use to self as well as other must be avoided]

பல்லார் முனியப் பயனில சொல்லுவான்

எல்லாரும் எள்ளப் படும்.

                              (குறள் 191: பயனில சொல்லாமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

pallAr muniyap payanila solluvAn

ellArum eLLap paDum

pallAr –  For many

muniyap – to be disgusted or be angered at,

payanila – useless words

solluvAn – one who speaks such

ellArum – by everybody

eLLappaDum – reviled  (spoken lowly)

Those who speak useless words that other hate or get angry about, will be reviled or made fun of! The phrase “ellArum eLLappaDum” has been interpreted by commentators as “reviled by every body”, which is syntactically incorrect.  “ellArum” is in active voice and “eLLappaDum” is in passive voice and they don’t go together in sentence construction. If we read the phrase like “ payanila solluvAr ellArum”, it makes more sense - meaning all those who speak useless words. VaLLuvar must have intended only this way.

Subtle language nuances have been either lost during the process of transcribing from the palm leaves or must have skipped considering the volume of work, or the commentators ignored these little lapses in the sentence construction as poetic license. Also, the word “solluvAn” must also be “solluvAr” as useless talk can not be simply pinned to one gender (here masculine). After all “vain speak” is common to both genders.

“All that indulge in hated vain speak 

  Will be made fun of by all as freaks”

பல்லார் – பலரும்

முனியப் - வெறுக்கும்படியாக அல்லது கோபப்படும்படியாக

பயனில – எந்தவித பயனுமில்லாத

சொல்லுவான் – சொற்களைச் சொல்கின்றவன்

எல்லாரும் - எல்லோராலும்

எள்ளப்படும் – இகழப்படுவான், நகைக்கப்படுவான்

பலராலும் வெறுக்கத்தக்க அல்லது கோபப்படத்தக்க, பயனற்ற பேச்சினைக் கொண்டவர்கள் எல்லோராலும் இகழப்படுவார்கள் அல்லது கேலி பேசி நகைக்கப்படுவார்கள்.  “எல்லாரும் எள்ளப்படும்” என்பதை “எல்லோராலும் எள்ளப்படும்” என்றே எல்லோரும் பொருள் செய்திருக்கின்றனர்.  சொற்றொடர் அமைப்பிலே இது சரியாக இல்லை. “சொல்லுவார் எல்லாரும்” என்றிருக்குமானால் அப்படிப் பயனில்லா பேசுகிறவர்கள் எல்லாரும் என்று பொருள் படும். சொற்றொடர் இலக்கணத்துக்கும் பொருந்திவரும்.

பிறர் பொருள் செய்திருக்கிறபடி எழுதவேண்டுமென்றால், வள்ளுவர் “சொல்வாரை எல்லாரும் எள்ளிடு வர்” என்று எழுதியிருப்பார்.  எனவே இக்குறளை “பயனில சொல்லுவார் எல்லோரும்” என்றே இருக்கவேண்டும். சொல்லுவானில் இருக்கிற முற்றெழுத்து “னகர” ஒற்றாக இல்லாமல், “ர” ஒற்றாகத்தான் இருக்கவேண்டும். பயனில சொல்லாமை “பால்” பிரிவுகளுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டதல்லவா?
