129: (Hastening for coition  - புணர்ச்சி விதும்பல்)

[Sensing that her lover may be leaving soon, the maiden hastens for coition and for the same reason her lover also hastens for the same. Though both would hasten for such union and reunion before leaving and right after leaving, the chapter has been written mostly in the voice of the maiden in love]

uLLak kaLittalum – having pleasure even by thinking
kANa magizdalum – and by seeing
kaLLukk(u) il – is not possible even with toddy,
kAmattiRk(u) uNDu – but coition can give that pleasure.

Parimelazhagar pictures this verse as being said the maiden to her friend. Friend asks maiden as to why she hastens to have coition with her lover who is ready to leave, instead of being upset with him. To which, maiden answers thus: Even drinking toddy, is not pleasurable by thinking or by seeing, but the coition is!  So, what is in my mind now, I have no mind or time to think about his leaving or the displeasure it yields.

“Pleasure by thinking or happiness by seeing
not even in toddy; but for sure in lovemaking”

peNNinAl peNmai uDaittenba kaNNinAl
kAmanOi solli iravu

peNNinAl – because of the lady (“Penamyin” would be meaningful here)
peNmai uDaittenba – has the quality that makes a fine lady
kaNNinAl – with movements in her eyes
kAmanOi solli – she would suggest and convey her pain of separation from beloved
iravu – and would request (to go with her beloved)

The first word of this verse is rather confusing; The 3rd declension in Tamil language is “Al” ending for common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns. When conjugating with the word “PeN” it would mean “with the girl”; it does not make sense to form a sentence “having finesse with the girl”; In a round about way, we may make sense out of the original tamil phrase as follows: “Even other ladies would praise her as one having finesse of a fine lady”. Since it is difficult for ladies in general to accept the finesse in other ladies in their own group, whole-heartedly, he could have used such a phrase. A little mischievous side of VaLLuvar! Regardless, the meaning of the verse is perhaps this:

Not saying out in words, about how much she would miss her lovers’ separation, her gesture using her eyes would convey that she was asking to go with him. Even other ladies would praise her finesse as a fine lady. Why is it so special? Perhaps because, it is rare for ladies to accept finesse in other ladies!

None from the earlier commentators such as ManakkuDavar, Parimelazhagar to present commentators have explained this properly; the commentary has been done rather blindly without clarifying the confusing usage in the first phrase. Perhaps the verse itself could have been wrongly copied to begin with. This verse again leaves an ambiguity and could be construed as being said to her friend or beloved, by the maiden.

“Hinting the painful disease of love through her eyes, to go with her beloved,
the maiden whose feminine finesse better than itself, would request subdued”

toDinOkki mentOLum nOkki aDinOkki
ahdANDavaLsei dadu

toDi nOkki – Looking at the bangles which are ready to come off hands
mentOLum nOkki – also looking at the shoulders which have thinned to enable that
aDi nOkki – she would look at her feet
ahd(u) ANDu – that’s what there
avaL seidadu – she did (as hint)

Because of the lover leaving her pining, he would lose her lustre; she would look at the bangles that are ready to come off; and would also look at her shoulders that have become thin. She looks at the feet implying to her friend that she is not able to bear this separation and is ready to leave in search of him

The verse can be interpreted differently too. Since the feet do the walking (nada in tamizh), the implied action also means “happening”. She could be implying or hinting it to her lover not to leave her by looking at her feet to prevent the first two from happening.

“Bangles are ready to come off and the shoulders have thinned
She looks at the feet; Not to walk away from her is, there hinted”

nerunaRRuch chenRAr – He left me only yesterday
em kAdalar – my lover!
yAmum – But I
ezunALEm – as if he left long time back (somehow sensing he would leave)
mEni pasandu – my body lost lustre.

My lover left me only yesterday; but my body has lost lustre as if he has been away for seven days already (“many days” is implied). As said in the previous two verses, the maiden feels the impending separation even when her lover is with her and hence has lost her lustre.

“My lover left me only yesterday; but my bodys’ lustre lost
already as if he has been away for long leaving me to dust”
