பெண்ணினால் பெண்மை உடைத்தென்ப கண்ணினால்
காமநோய் சொல்லி இரவு.
(குறள் 1279:
குறிப்பறிவுறுத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
பெண்ணினால் - பெண்ணவளால் (பெண்மையின் என்பதே பொருந்தும்)
பெண்மை உடைத்தென்ப - பெண்மை மிக்க கொண்டதுபோலாம்
கண்ணினால் - தம்முடைய கண்ணசைவாலேயே
காமநோய் சொல்லி - தன்னுடைய காதல் துன்பத்தை கூறி
இரவு - வேண்டுதல் (தலைவனோடு உடன் போகுதலை)
இக்குறளின் முதற்சொல் சற்று குழப்புவதாக உள்ளது.
மூன்றாம் வேற்றுமை உருபான “ஆல்” விகுதி பெண் என்ற சொல்லோடு சேர்ந்து, “பெண்ணைக் கொண்டு”
என்று பொருளாகிறது. “பெண்ணைக்கொண்டு பெண்மை உடைத்து என்ப” பொதுவாக, சரியானச் சொற்றொடராகத்
தெரியவில்லை. ஒருவேளை, பெண்களே கூறிப் பெருமைகொள்ளத்தக்க பெருமை என்று வேண்டுமானாலும்
கொள்ளலாம்.
மணக்குடவர், பரிமேலழகர் முதல் மற்ற நவீன உரையாசிரியர்கள்
வரை, எல்லோரும் இதைப் விளக்காமல், “பெண்மைக்கே பெண்மை கொண்டாற்போல” என்று பொதுவாக பொருள்
தோன்ற உரை செய்துள்ளனர். இது குருட்டுத்தனமாகச் செய்யப்பட்டதாகவே தோன்றுகிறது. குறளைப்
படிமம் எடுத்ததில் தவறிருந்திருக்கலாம். எவ்வாறிருந்தாலும் வள்ளுவர் சொல்லவந்த கருத்து
இதுவாக இருக்கலாம்.. இதுவும் அனுமானமே!
காதற்தலைவனுடைய பிரிவால் வந்த காதல் துன்பத்தை, வாயால் கூறி வேண்டாமல்,
கண்களின் அசைவாலேயே குறிப்பால் உணர்த்துகிற பெண்மை பெண்மையினும் சிறந்த பெண்மையை உடைத்ததாகிறது.
அதாவது பெண்களே போற்றுகிற பெண்மையை உடையவளாக இருக்கிறாளாம் காதற்தலைவி. தம்மைவிட மற்ற
பெண்களை எதிலும் சிறந்ததாகக் கொள்வது பெண்களுக்குப் பொதுவாக அரிதான செயல் என்பதால்,
வள்ளுவர், இவ்வாறு சிறப்பித்துச் சொல்லியுமிருக்கலாம். அதாவது, பெண்மையே சிறப்பு. அதனினும்
சிறந்த பெண்மையை அப்பெண் உடைத்தவளாகிறாள். இக்குறளைத் தலைவனிடம் வேண்டுவதாகவும் கொள்ளலாம்,
அல்லது தோழியிடம் கூறி உடன்போகுதலுக்கு உதவக் கேட்பதாகவும் கொள்ளலாம்.
Transliteration:
peNNinAl peNmai uDaittenba
kaNNinAl
kAmanOi solli iravu
peNNinAl – because of the lady (“Penamyin” would
be meaningful here)
peNmai uDaittenba – has the quality that makes a fine
lady
kaNNinAl – with movements in her eyes
kAmanOi solli – she would suggest and convey her pain
of separation from beloved
iravu – and would request (to go with her
beloved)
The first word of this verse is rather
confusing; The 3rd declension in Tamil language is “Al” ending for
common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns. When conjugating with the word “PeN”
it would mean “with the girl”; it does not make sense to form a sentence
“having finesse with the girl”; In a round about way, we may make sense out of
the original tamil phrase as follows: “Even other ladies would praise her as
one having finesse of a fine lady”. Since it is difficult for ladies in general
to accept the finesse in other ladies in their own group, whole-heartedly, he
could have used such a phrase. A little mischievous side of VaLLuvar! Regardless,
the meaning of the verse is perhaps this:
Not saying out in words, about how much
she would miss her lovers’ separation, her gesture using her eyes would convey
that she was asking to go with him. Even other ladies would praise her finesse as
a fine lady. Why is it so special? Perhaps because, it is rare for ladies to
accept finesse in other ladies!
None from the earlier commentators such as
ManakkuDavar, Parimelazhagar to present commentators have explained this
properly; the commentary has been done rather blindly without clarifying the
confusing usage in the first phrase. Perhaps the verse itself could have been
wrongly copied to begin with. This verse again leaves an ambiguity and could be
construed as being said to her friend or beloved, by the maiden.
“Hinting the painful disease of love through
her eyes, to go with her beloved,
the maiden whose feminine finesse better than
itself, would request subdued”
