anbagathillA uyirvAzhkkai vanpARkaN
vatRal maram thaLirthatRu

anbagathillA – (anbu + agaththu illA) – heart without the love and compassion
uyirvAzhkkai  - the life of such
vanpARkaN – a land where no life possible (equal to a desert, wasteland)
vatRal –that which is lifeless
maram - tree
thaLirthatRu – equilavent to spring life (the lifeless tree in a waste land)

The life of any being without the good virtue of love and compassion is like saying that a dead tree in a wasteland is sprouting. The life of such beings can not sprout and is considered wasted. With the wetness of love, in the fertile soil of mind, when character is sowed, the tree that is life will sprout and bloom. When there is lack of love in life, such a life is “wasted one”,  is what is alluded in this verse of vaLLuvar.

One of the vaishnavite saints, BhoodhaththAzavAr, would say “anbE thagaLiyA, ArvamE neyyAkaga, inburugu chinthai iDu thiryaa…” In the lamp of love, we need to fill it with interest as the ghee and sweetness of thought as the wick to light the knowledge – which gives the good life. Hence the love is the fundamental to good life. This is not meant of Lord Vishnu, but for all the lives on earth.

Life of loveless hearts is like saying a tree dead
In a wasteland is blooming, an impossible deed

Enbiladhanai veyilpOlak kAyumE
Anbiladhanai aRam

Enbiladhanai – Like how, boneless worms
veyilpOlak –are baked under the scorching sun
kAyumE – will completely burn (metaphorically)
Anbiladhanai – the loveless, compassionless people
aRam – the power of virtue

In SilappadikAram, one of the three tenets is: ‘those who slip in their political duty, their lack of virtue will become the reason for their death’.  The Pandya king slipped in his duty of being just, and loving to all his subjects equally. His love for his wife weighed more before the welfare of and love for his citizens, which stood the reason for his misjudgement and killing of Kovalan. The chain reaction was that his and his queen’s death and distruction of his city came because of that.

The boneless worms are rendered formless and dead by the heat of scorching sun. Similar fate will be for the pople that lack love for fellow beings. Their lack of love will justify their acts that are unkind and unjust towards others which in turn will have repurcussion to harm them.

Scorching sun burns the worm, boneless
So does the virtue, to the beings, loveless

aRathiRkE anbusAr benba aRiyAr
maRathiRkkum ahdhE thuNai

aRathiRkE – Only for virtuous ways
anbu – love/compassion
sArbenba - helps
aRiyAr – is what is said by people, not knowing (what love can really do!)
maRathiRkkum – even for the deed of vice
ahdhE  - that can be
thuNai – a true help (by being compassionate to people of vice, they can indeed be changed )

Even for an enemy, to be compassionate and loving, is a utopian thought borne out extreme belief in goodness and ultimate hope of reciprocation. For most, it is an unthinkable and not so practical feat. The verse says, only unwise think that being a loving and compassionate person is only a support for virtues.  But the truth is that it is also an equal support to people that are vice and vile.

Love has the ability to change even the worst enemy and turn them virtuous. But this requires utmost faith in goodness to prevail at the end and be consistent in love.  We all read again and again “Sathyameva Jayathe” and hold it as the highest truth. But howmany truly believe in that? Just like many great truths, it requires faith and surrendering to see its eventual victory.

As in Bhagavad Gita, “doing the duty, not expecting the return” is absolutely true for love and compassion too. If it is done expecting a return, it may lead only to disappointments most of the times, but eventually it has the power to change even the most stone-hearted person to change and give in.

There is another saying – “Be loving but never gullible”. This must have come from the experience of taking something verbatim and practicing it blindly; reminds us of the story of the saint and the snake as narrated by Bhagavan Sri. Ramakrishna.

Ignorant say, unwary of its power, Love supports only virtuous
Indeed it is equally a support to mend the vice and treacherous

anbutRu – With love and compassion
amarndha – the life that’s lived
vazhakkenba  - is what the life is as said by he learned.
Vayagaththu – in this world
inbutRar – those who have a happy and blissful life
eidhum – what they get
siRappu – as glory

Living happily in this world is bestowed by the life filled with love and compassion for other lives. Love gives kindness and empathy; kindness leads to virtous deeds; virtuous deeds accord the status of being blessed by everyone which is the very essence and use of life, according to learned people.

Parimelazhagar in his commentary for this verse has interpreted “vazakku” (வழக்கு) as ‘a good family life with wife and children, doing all the virtuous duties, with the daily oblatory sacred fire and eventually becoming one among the celestial beings”. This does not fit the context as the sacred fire is stipulated for certain section of the society and vaLLuvar did not certainly have that narrow point of view!

This is just another verse where I think vaLLuvar has said the obvious, for reasone only known to him

“Happy and blissful life is theirs in this world
For who lead life with love for others as guide”

Anbu Inum Arvam uDamai adhu Inum
NaNbu ennum nAdAch chiRappu

Anbu – Being loving and compassionate
Inum - gives
Arvam uDamai – interest for others to (to be friends one who is loving and compassionate)
adhu  - that interest in others
Inum - gives
NaNbu  - friendship
ennum – that is
nAdAch – even  without going and seeking
chiRappu – the glory (that such people will get great friends without them seeking)

When somebody is affectionate and loving, there will be many that will be interested in knowing them to befriend them. The interest shown by others, will bring good friendships without even seeking on their own.

Loving and compassionate persons are devoid of vengeance and enmity and hence many will seek their friendship. Just because they have compassion and love, it does mean they lack the inner strength to be discerning in their friendship.  Though people that reciprocate truly as well as self-seeking will reach out to compassionate persons; since valluavar has specifically said, “nAdach chirappu”, he implies great friends with great quality and support will always be with them. Since best friends will care the best for their friends, self seeking false friends will not even come close to the compassionate souls.

“Love and compassion gives interest for all to seek
friendship that is glory with those, without any seek”

anbOdu iyaindha vazhakkenba Aruyirukku
enbOdu iyaindha thodarbu

anbODu  - love and compassion
iyaindha  -  linked
vazhakk(u) enba – deeds of past birth
Aruyirukku – for dear life (to imply what we get in the present birth)
enbODu –  the bone borne body
iyaindha  - is linked to
thodarbu – the continuation in this birth.

Just like we know the existence of our life through the activities of this bone borne body, through somebody’s deeds, we know their compassion for those for whom they do those deeds. In Parimelazagar’s commentary, he implies that the very purpose of this life with the body is to live a life of love and compassion.

Though, there can’t be any second opinion on that, the following way seems more appropriate. His interpretation of the word, “thodarbu” is “continuation” as in “one follows another”. But the regular usage the word “thodarbu” means “connection”, which means how two thinks are linked or should be linked.

Another commentator, “maNakkudavar” has said that life with this body and soul is a continuation and connected to the kind and compassionate deeds of past birth. This alludes to Auvayyar’s thought of “aridhu aridhu mAnidarAip piraththal aridhu”, implying the birth as a human being is a rare gift.

Another commentator Kaviraja Pandithar has also expressed the same thought in his commentary.

The life exhibits itself through our body. Likewise, the compassion and love in a person is exhibited through their kind acts. The lifeless body is a dead substance; similarly are the deeds done without the reason of compassion and love.

So I have tried to reflect both thoughts in two different verses today. The second verse is making more sense if we subscribe to the karma theory and cycle of birth and death. For those who don’t, the first verse will suffice.

“Life of this bone borne body is continuity and a rare gift
Of compassionate life of previous births, not mere adrift”

anbilAr ellAm thamakkuriyar anbudaiyAr
enbum uriyar piRarkku

anbilAr – those who don’t have love for other lives
ellAm - everything
thamakkuriyar  - want as their own (out of utter selfishness)
anbudaiyAr – Those whose hearts are filled with love and compassion for all
enbum – even their bone ( just a symbolic reference)
uriyar piRarkku – will dedicate to others to use, for over all good.

In Hindu Mythology, there is story of how Indra acquired his weapon Vajraayutham. To vanquish the demon Vrudhirasura, Indra needed a very powerful weapon. At the behest of Lord Vishnu, he went to a very selfless sage “Dadhichi”, revered amongst the greatest of sages and is portrayed as an example that no sacrifice is too great when the result is the good of the world.

He gave up his life for the Devas to make use of his backbone, to create the greatest of weapons “VajrAyutha” for Lord Indra, to vanquish evil asura “VrithrA”.  His bones symbolize the sacrifice and strength together and the weapon “VajrAyutha”is the symbol in the India’s highest gallant award "Parm veer chakra" , the backbone, literally and symbolically, the sacrifice for the country.

The true love is selfless. Only those who don’t know the potent weapon in love think everything belongs to them.  They are selfish and devoid of love, not even because, they love themselves somuch. If they did, they would atleast relalize that their avarice and lack of love would lead to their own distruction eventually and would do try to mend themselves out of self-love.  Those whose hearts are filled with love for the otherlives, do know the meaning of sacrifice. There is a popular saying that some people would even go to the extent of using their flesh as footware for those they love.

This verse is another example of vaLLuvar was well versed and had deep rooted belief in the Hindu mythology to take this implied referece of “Sage Dadhichi”.  To use the sacrifice of bone as the ultimate symbol of love is not done by living persons and not even dead persons. The story of King Sibi to give his flesh for justice for a cow, and this story of giving the backbone for good to prevail can be discarded as mere stories or the examples of greatest virtues taken from lives of people to drive home the virtues.

“People of Love and compassion sacrifice even their own bone

Transliteration:
anbiRkkum uNdO aDaikkumthAz Arvalar
punkaNIr pUsal tharum

anbiRkkum – for someone to not display love (towards somebody they have utmost affection for)
uNdO  - is there
aDaikkumthAz  - a latch that can keep it locked? (even if they want to not show for any reason)
Arvalar – those who have immense love (affection) for someone
punkaNIr – tear drops that trickles down
pUsal tharum – will announce it loudly (for others to know it)

When there is affection for somebody, sometimes it may not be possible to reveal it explicitly for various reasons. But the trickling tear drops reveal more than words can express, when we think of them or talk about them or may have to part them for any reason or no reason.  Similarly, when there is a reunion with someone we love, that was away for a long time, words dry up, joy overwhelms, eyes well up.   Likewise, when we hear painful news about somebody that we love and care for, our eyes cannot help but build screen of tear drops.

Pure love and affection, melts the hearts, and gives inexplicable, unexplainable emotions of happiness, longing, pain, and sadness and that can result in tears in eyes. During such moments, it is impossible to latch up the overwhelming emotional outburst of love and affection. For such weak attempts, the trickle of tears will reveal the love loud and clear. This is what is expressed by this verse.

Once again, unlike how vaLLuvar has been depicted as a saint in pictures and statues, we can see through the past and ensuing chapters, that he possibly lived a life to the fullest extent to understand these various facets and aspects of human life

“Is there a latch that can shut the love’s expression?
When tear trickles make  a loud and clear revelation!”
