ஊடி இருந்தேமாத் தும்மினார் யாம்தம்மை 


நீடுவாழ் கென்பாக் கறிந்து.

                           (குறள் 1312: புலவி நுணுக்கம் அதிகாரம்)

ஊடி இருந்தேமாத் - நாங்கள் ஊடியிருந்தோம்

தும்மினார் - அப்போது அவர் தும்மினார்

யாம்தம்மை 
- நான் அப்போதாவது தன்னை

நீடு வாழ்கென்பாக்கு - நீடு வாழ்க என்று சொல்லி உரையாடுவேன் என்பதை

அறிந்து - தாம் உணர்ந்து.

இதில் தலைவி தன் தலைவனின் கள்ள நோக்கத்தை அறிந்தவளாகப் பேசுகிறாள். இருவரும் ஊடி இருக்கையிலே, அவர் தும்மினாராம். அப்போதாவது தாம் அவரைப்பார்த்து “நீடு வாழ்க” என்று சொல்லி உரையாடத் தொடங்குவோம் என்று எதிர்பார்த்து. தும்முவது என்பது ஒருகணம் மூச்சு நின்று வருவது; இறப்புக்குச் சமம். அதனால் தும்மும்போது இப்போதும்கூட “நீண்ட ஆயுள் உண்டாவதாக” என்று பொருள் வரும்படி,”தீர்காயுசு” என்பர் பெரியோர். இந்த பழக்கம் இந்தியப்பழக்கமாக மட்டும் இல்லாமல், மேற்கத்திய நாடுகளிலும், “கடவுள் உன்னை ஆசீர்வதிக்கட்டும்” (God bless) என்று கூறுகிறார்கள். இது கலாச்சாரங்களைத் தாண்டி வரும் பழக்கம்தான்.

Transliteration:

Udi irundEmAt tumminAr yAmtammai

nIDuvAz kenpAk kaRindu

Udi irundEmAt – We were in love quarrel

tumminAr – then he sneezed

yAmtammai – expecting that I would to say to him

nIDuvAz kenpAkku  - “Long live” (God bless)

aRindu – knowing that. (or expecting that)

In this verse, the maiden speaks understanding her lovers’ mischievous intentions. When both of them had love-quarrel for sometime, her lover sneezed, expecting that the maiden would say, “Long live” or “God bless” to break the silence between them. Sneezing is considered a momentary death, because the  heart is t to stop for a second (though in reality only  the heart rate is adjusted). Looks like it has been at least 2000 year old custom to say “Long live” not only in India, but in western civilizations too.

“When we were in love quarrel, he sneezed; perhaps knowing

  I would say “Long live” to break the uneasy silence brewing”
