108: (Baseness - கயமை)

[This is the last chapter of “portuT pAl” –(Wealth), a major section. vaLLuvar concludes this with the chapter on baseness. A lot has been discussed about the virtues to have and traits to be devoid of thus far. This chapter is particularly focusing on the baseness in the people and what defines that in people.]

மக்களே போல்வர் கயவர் அவரன்ன

ஒப்பாரி யாங்கண்ட தில்.

                        (குறள் 1071: கயமை அதிகாரம்)

மக்களே போல்வர் - புறத்தோற்றத்தில் மக்களென்பாரைப் போன்றோரே

கயவர் - கீழ் குணமுடையவர்கள்

அவரன்ன - அவ்விரண்டு பிரிவுகளுக்கும் இடையே உள்ள

ஒப்பாரி - உருவத்தால் மட்டுமாகிய ஒப்புமை

யாம் கண்டதில் - நாம் வேறு கண்டதில்லை,

கயவர் என்போரை வரையறுக்கச் சொல்லி வள்ளுவரை யாராவது கேட்டிருக்கக்கூடும். அவர்களுக்கு பதிலிருப்பது போன்ற குறள் இது. கீழ்க்குணம் கொண்டோருக்கும் மற்ற மக்களுக்கும் பெரிய புற வேற்றுமை ஒன்றுமில்லை என்பதே நாமெல்லாம் காணுவது. இரண்டு பிரிவினரும் உருவத்தால் மனித இனத்தரைப் போன்றோரே! மற்று, கீழ்க்குணத்தோரை மக்களோடு ஒப்பு வைக்கவியலாது என்பதே இக்குறள் உணர்த்தும் கருத்து!  வள்ளுவரின் நையாண்டி உச்சத்திலுள்ள குறள் இது என்றும் கொள்ளலாம்.

அவர்களை விலங்குகளோடும் ஒப்பமுடியாது. விலங்குகளுள்ளும், நற்குணம் கொண்டவையும், மனிதரிடையேயும் காணவியலாத சில அபூர்வ ஒழுக்கவியல் கூறுபாடுகள் உள்ளன.

Transliteration:

makkaLE pOlvar kayavar avaranna

oppAri yAngkaNDa dil

makkaLE pOlvar -  In external look they look like normal people

kayavar – the people of base, squalid nature

avaranna – Among these two categories

oppAri – striking similarity in looks alone

yAm kaNDadil – We have not seen anywhere else.

vaLLuvars’ sarcasm is at its best. He has written this verse as if someone has asked him to define the people of base nature. His answer is that there is not much external difference between to find between those two classes. They both look like human being only - implying base people cannot be placed with humans.

People of base nature cannot be placed among animals either, as among animals there are many that have good traits that are not even seen in humans as studies on animals indicate.

“Humans look similarly to base

 No external difference in face”
