தெண்ணீர் அடுபுற்கை ஆயினும் தாள்தந்தது

உண்ணலின் ஊங்கினிய தில்.

                        (குறள் 1065: இரவச்சம் அதிகாரம்)

தெண்ணீர் - தெளிந்த நீரைப் போல்

அடு - சமைக்கப்பட்ட

புற்கை ஆயினும் - கூழே ஆயினும் (வெற்று நீர்க்கஞ்சி)

தாள் தந்தது - அது நெறியான முறையான் வந்தது என்றால்

உண்ணலின் - அதை உண்ணுதலிலும்

ஊங்கு - மேலாம்

இனியது இல் - இனிமையானது இல்லை

தெளிந்த நீரைப்போன்று சமைக்கப்பட்ட கூழாகவே இருப்பினும், அது நெறியான முறையால் வந்ததென்றால், அதாவது பிறரை இரந்து உண்ணாது வந்ததெனில், அதை உண்ணுதலிலும் மேலான இனிமையானது வேறு இல்லை.

இரவாமை என்பதை வள்ளுவர் ஏற்றிச் சொன்னாலும், இது உலக வழக்குக்கு எல்லா நேரங்களிலும் ஒவ்வாத ஒன்றே. தவநெறி ஒழுகுபவர்களுக்குப் பிச்சையெடுத்துண்பது விதிக்கப்பட்ட நெறியாகவே உள்ளது. பிச்சைப்புகினும் கற்கை நன்றே, என்று பிச்சையெடுத்தலைப் படிப்புக்காகச் செய்யலாம் என்று ஔவையும் கூறியுள்ளதையும் நினைவில் கொள்ளவேண்டும். யாசிப்பதுகூட ஏன், யார், எதற்காக என்பதே என்பதைப் பொறுத்ததாம். “ஐயமும் பிச்சையும் ஆந்தனையும் கைகாட்டி” என்று ஆண்டாள் பாடுவது தக்காருக்கு ஈந்து இடுதலையும், இரந்து கேட்பாருக்குத் தருவதையும் நோன்பின் அறமாகத்தான். திருவெம்பாவையிலும் மாணிக்கவாசகர், “உடலிடு பிச்சையோடு ஐயமும் உண்டியென்று பலகூறி” என்று சிவபெருமானுக்கு பிறர் தாமாக இட்டதையும், சிவபெருமானே, காபால ஓட்டை ஏந்தி பிச்சை எடுத்ததையும் பாடுவார்.

Transliteration:

theNNIr aDupuRkai Ayinum thALthandadu

uNNalin Ungkiniya dil

theNNIr – like clear water

aDu – that which is cooked is

puRkai Ayinum – just a porridge (so watery)

thAL thandadu – if it was brought with virtuous ways (not begging)

uNNalin – drinking that

Ungku – better than that

Iniyad(u) il – nothing sweeter than that.

A weak porridge made watery, if brought in virtuous ways without begging others, then there is nothing better and sweeter than drinking it.

Though vaLLuvar speaks about not begging as exalted virtue, for the worldy ways it is a far fetched reality. Also, for penitents seeking alms, it is a stipulated virtue; and did we not hear Auvayyar say, even if it amounts to begging for learning, it is better that way?

Over all conclusion must be, that begging for self-feeding without any useful pay back to the society or community is indeed a not a virtuous act.

“Even drinking the weak porridge cooked is better

 if it comes the virtuous way and nothing sweeter”
