உற்றான் அளவும் பிணியளவும் காலமும்

கற்றான் கருதிச் செயல்.

                                    (குறள் 949: மருந்து அதிகாரம்)

உற்றான் - நோயுற்றார்

அளவும் - வயது, பருவம் இவற்றை அறிந்து

பிணியளவும் - அவருற்ற நோயின் தன்மையும், வலியுமறிந்து

காலமும் - நோய் தணிக்க தமக்கு இருக்கும் நேரம், மற்றும் தகுந்த நேரம் இவற்றை

கற்றான் - நூலறிந்த கற்றுச் சிறந்த மருத்துவன்

கருதிச் - தம் கருத்தில் கொண்டு

செயல்- மருத்துவம் செய்யவேண்டும்

ஒரு தேர்ந்த மருத்துவர், நோயாளியின் வயது, அவருற்ற நோயின் வலிமை, அவரது நோய் தணிக்க தனக்கிருக்கும் நேரம் இவற்றைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு அவருக்கு மருத்துவம் செய்யவேண்டும்.  பிணி ஒன்றே ஆயினும் ஒருவரின் வயது, அவருடை உடலின் தற்போதைய நிலைமை, அவருக்கு எந்தவிதமான மருத்துவம் ஏற்கும் என்பதை அறிந்து, மருத்துவம் செய்வதற்கான கால அளவு இவற்றை உணர்ந்து மருத்துவம் செய்பவரே சிறந்த மருத்துவர்.

“அறுவை சிகிச்சை வெற்றிகரம், ஆனால் நோயாளி மரணம்” என்ற அளவில் மருத்துவர்கள் செயல்படக்கூடாது. நல்ல மருத்துவரே நல்ல மருந்துமாவார் என்பதைக் கூறும் குறளிது. இக்குறளின் குறிக்கப்படும் கால அளவு என்பது, மருத்துவம் செய்ய ஏற்ற நேரத்தையும், இருக்கின்ற கால அளவையும் குறிப்பதாகும். காலம் தாழ்த்திச் செய்வதோ, அல்லது காலத்திற்கு முன்பாகவே செய்வதோ, இரண்டுமே மருத்துவத்தில் தவிர்க்கப்படவேண்டியன.

Transliteration:

uRRAn aLavum piNiyaLavum kAlamum

kaRRAn karudich cheyal

uRRAn – that who is afflicted by disease, the patient

aLavum – his/her age

piNiyaLavum – the extent of the disease

kAlamum – the time available to cure for appropriate for treatment

kaRRAn – an expert doctor

karudich – will consider all such factors and

cheyal – give the right treatment/medicine to the patient

An expert and learned doctor shall consider all the factors such as the age of the patient (vital in deciding what type treatment will be agreeable), the extent of the disease in the patient, and the time available to the treatment for it to be effective for the patient;

“Operation success, but patient died” cannot be the way a learned doctos shall function. A confident, reliable, learned doctor himself is half the cure and also a perfect medicine for a patient. The time measure mentioned in this verse implies both the time available as well as appropriate time to do the treatment for it to be effective.

“An expert shall consider all factors such as patients’ age, extent of illness

and available and appropriate time for treatment to restore them to fitness”
