93: ( Not drinking toddy - கள்ளுண்ணாமை )

[In the last verse of previous chapter “wanton woman”, vaLLuvar had enlisted toddy and gambling as two other vices along with being in the company of harlots as the main cause of losing all wealth. This chapter and the next are about the evil of toddy consumption and gambling respectively. Toddy or any other intoxicant is mind-numbing and is certain to make anyone's brain function to be affected to act irrationally, which in turn results in loss of everything good. In this chapter, vaLLuvar lists all such ill-effects of toddy drinking]

உட்கப் படாஅர் ஒளியிழப்பர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்

கட்காதல் கொண்டொழுகு வார்.

(குறள் 921: கள்ளுண்ணாமை அதிகாரம்)

உட்கப் படாஅர் - பகைவரால் அஞ்சப்படார், மதிக்கப்படார்

ஒளியிழப்பர் - தமக்கு உரியதாம் புகழையும் இழப்பர்

எஞ்ஞான்றும் - எப்போதும்

கட்காதல் - போதையில் ஆழ்த்தி அறிவை குலைக்கும் கள்ளின் மேல் ஆசை

கொண்டொழுகுவார் - கொண்டு அதை அருந்துவதிலேயே மனத்தைச் செலுத்தியவர்.

கள்ளருந்துதல் உடலுக்குமட்டுமன்றி ஒருவர் அறிவைச் சிதைக்கும் தன்மையது. அதனாலேயே அவர்கள் பகைவர்களால் மதிக்கப்படுவதுமில்லை, அஞ்சப்படுவதுமில்லை. அவருக்குண்டாயிருந்த புகழும், அறிவுச் செறிவும் இல்லாது அழியும் என்று கள்ளருந்துதலின் தீமையைப் பொதுவாகக் கூறும் குறள் இது. இவ்வாறு குடியைக் கெடுக்கும் குடியைப் பற்றி, அறநெறிச் சாரப்பாடல் சொல்லி, அதை விட்டொழிக்க வலியுறுத்துகிறது.

ஒளியும் ஒளிசான்ற செய்கையும் சான்றோர்

தெளிவுடையார் என்று உரைக்கும் தேசும் - களியென்னும்

கட்டுரையால் கோதப்படுமேல் இவையெல்லாம்,

விட்டொழியும் வேறாய் விரைந்து.

Transliteration:

uTkap pADAar oLiyizhappar enjAnRum

kaTkAdal koNDOzhugu vAr

uTkap pADAar – Not feared by enemies or respected

oLiyizhappar – will lose even the repute and radiance they have

enjAnRum - always

kaTkAdal – those who have love for toddy

koNDOzhuguvAr – and live their life consuming it''

Being obsessed with toddy is not only injurious to health, but will destroy thinking of anyone; and they will not be respected or feared by their enemies. Apart from that, they will lose their radiance of glory; Thus saying the ill-effects of toddy, vaLLuvar begins this chapter.

Lustful of toddy shall lose respect, fear of all

always; the brilliance, too shall fade and fall
