பயன்தூக்கிப் பண்புரைக்கும் பண்பில் மகளிர்

நயந்தூக்கி நள்ளா விடல்

                  (குறள் 912: வரைவில் மகளிர் அதிகாரம்)

பயன்தூக்கிப் - ஒருவரால் பெறக்கூடிய ஆதாயத்தை கணக்கிட்டு

பண்புரைக்கும் - அவர் இன்னார் என்று உயர்த்தியோ அல்லது தாழ்வாகவோ மதிப்பிடுதல்

பண்பில் மகளிர் - பண்பு இல்லாத பெண்கள் (வரைவில் மகளிர்)

நயந்தூக்கி - அவர்களுடைய ஒழுக்கத்தை ஆராய்ந்து

நள்ளா விடல் - அவரை விரும்பாமல் ஒழிக

ஆத்திச்சூடியில் ஔவையார், “மைவிழியார் மனை அகல்" என்று சொல்லியிருப்பார். பரத்தையர் வீடு சேர்வதும், அங்கே இருப்பதும் தவறென்று ஒருவர் உணர்ந்து, அம்மனை நீங்கவேண்டும். ஒருவரால் பெறக்கூடிய பயனை மட்டும் கணக்கிட்டு, அவரை உயர்வாகவோ, தாழ்வாகவோ பேசக்கூடிய இருநாக்கு மங்கையர் பண்பில்லாத பரத்தையர். அவர்கள் ஒழுக்கத்தை சீர்தூக்கி, அது சுயநலமிக்க உறவு என்பதை உணர்ந்து அத்தகைய பெண்டிரை விரும்பாது ஒழியவேண்டும் என்கிறது இக்குறள்.

payanthUkki paNburaikkum paNbil magaLir

nayanthUkki naLLA viDal

payanthUkki – Assessing the benefits likely to get from the person

paNburaikkum – to speak highly or lowly of a person

paNbil magaLir - characterless women

nayanthUkki – assessing their character

naLLA viDal – avoid their company

“Leave the whorehouse, the house of ill”, says AuvayyaAr in her work of virtue “AthichchUDi”. Realizing it is lack of virtue and a grave mistake to be in the house of prostitution, one must earnestly attempt to leave. Women of such house, that are twin-tongued, would assess the benefits and the fortune of someone and would speak highly or lowly of their clients. Realizing the selfish nature of such physical relationships, one shall apply caution and leave them, says this verse.

“Leave the company of women that weigh the gain

and speak accordingly, lowly or highly, to avoid pain”
