எண்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சத் திடனுடையார்க்கு எஞ்ஞான்றும்
பெண்சேர்ந்தாம் பேதைமை இல்.

எண் சேர்ந்த - வினைபால்
சென்ற
நெஞ்சத்து - உள்ளத்துச்
சிந்தனையும்
இடன் - அதனால் வரும் விளைபயனாம்
செல்வமும் (அல்லது) திடன் என்று கொண்டால் நெஞ்சுரம் என்று கொள்ளலாம்.
உடையார்க்கு - கொண்டவர்க்கு
எஞ்ஞான்றும் - எப்போதும்
பெண்சேர்ந்தாம் - பெண்ணைச் சேர்ந்து அதிலேயே ஒழுகும்
பேதைமை - மயக்கம்
இல் - இல்லை.
வினையும் அதை ஆற்றலுமென்று இரண்டிலுமே தம் முழு சிந்தனையையும் கொண்டவராகி, அதன்
விளைபயனாக வரும் செல்வமும் கொண்டவர்க்கு ஒரு பெண்ணைச் சேர்ந்து முயங்கிக் கிடப்பதாய
மயக்கம் இல்லை என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
பரிமேலழகர் “இடன்” என்பதை “பொருள்” என்று பொருள் செய்து, அதற்கு “இடனின்றி இரந்தோர்க்கு”
மற்றும் “இடனில் பருவத்தும்” என்ற வரிகளை மேற்கோளாகக் காட்டிகிறார். “நெஞ்சத் திடன்”,
என்பதை உள்ளத்து உரமும் என்றும் கொள்ளலாம். “எண்” என்பதும், “எண்ணம்” என்பதைக் குறிப்பதால்
அது வினைக்கண் முனைந்த எண்ணம் என்று கொள்வதும் பொருந்துகிறது.

thiDanuDaiyArkku enjAnRum
peNsErndAm pEdamai il
eN sErnda – Focused
on work and the deeds there in
nenjathth(u) – mind
set on that work
iDan – the
resulting fruit of that labor (or) if the word is taken as “thiDan” it would
mean the resolve
uDaiyArkku – one
that has (wealth or resolve)
enjAnRum - always
peNsErndAm – to be
lost in a woman’s company
pEdamai – such
foolishness
il – is not
there.
For persons being focused in the work at hand and its execution with mind
set on both, with the resulting fruits of such focused effort, the foolishness
of being lost in the womans’ company is not there. Other way around is also
true. Those who are lost in the company of a woman can never be focused on work
or be successful also.
The word “iDan” has been interpreted as “wealth” by Parimelazhagar and he
cites couple of reference lines from other poetry to justify that. If the word
has been interpreted as “thiDan”, it would mean the resolve that goes well with
the previous work of “heart”. The word “eN” does not mean number, but,
“thinking” in this verse.
