இன்பத்துள் இன்பம் பயக்கும் இகலென்னும்

துன்பத்துள் துன்பங் கெடின்.

                        (குறள் 854: இகல் அதிகாரம்)

இன்பத்துள் - இன்பங்கள் என்று சொல்லப்படுபவனவற்றில்

இன்பம் பயக்கும் - மிக்கதான இன்பம் பயக்கும்

இகலென்னும் - வெறுப்பில் வளரும் பகையுணர்வாம்,

துன்பத்துள் துன்பங் - எல்லாத் துன்பங்களிலும் கொடியது

கெடின் - அழியுமாயின்

எல்லோரிடத்திலும் பகைமை பாராட்டுதலால், ஒருவர் மற்றவர்கள் துணையின்றி வலிமை இழந்து, அதனாலேயே தக்க நேரத்தில் தம்மைக் பாதுகாக்க ஒருவருமின்றி, பிறரோடு மேலும் சண்டையிடும்போது தனித்தே இருக்கவேண்டியிருப்பதால், மிக்க துன்பத்துக்குள்ளாவார். அப்பகையுணர்வை தொலைத்துவிட்டால், அவருக்குத் துணையும், அதன்காரணம் பற்றி உதவியும், வலிமையும் வந்து சேரும், உள்ளத்தில் அன்பும் அமைதியும் நிலவும். அக்காரணம்பற்றி அவர் வாழ்வும் செம்மையுறும், செயலாக்கங்கள் வெற்றியுறும். இவை இன்பங்களுக்குள் தலையாய இன்பம் தானே.

Transiteration:

inbaththuL inbam payakkum igalennum

thunbaththuL thunbam keDin

inbaththuL – Among all that pleasurable

inbam payakkum – the best pleasure will be

igalennum – the enemity born of hostility that is

thunbaththuL thunbam – worst among all sufferings and miseries

keDin – is destroyed.

To be in enemity with everyone will be loss of strength; hence in times of distress no one would come to help and that would be more painful than pain in normal course of life. Once that feeling of enemity is removed, a genuinely friendly posture or even lack of enemity would find help and strength in times of need; Mind would be in peaceful, compassionate stance; life would sail in proper peaceful course instead of perpetual collision course; this in turn would be the greatest delight of all.

 is destroyed, there is none more pleasurable as prosperity”
