கேட்டினும் உண்டோ உறுதி கிளைஞரை

நீட்டி அளப்பதோர் கோல்.

கேட்டினும்   - கேடு வருவதைக் காட்டிலும்

உண்டோர் உறுதி - ஊன்றி உறுதியாக காட்டக்கூடிய

கிளைஞரை - இவர் நண்பரென்று

நீட்டி அளப்பதோர் - இவருடைய நட்பு இத்தகைய நீட்சியாம் என்று அளக்கின்ற

கோல் - ஒரு நீளத்தை அளக்கும் கருவி

ஒரு நட்பின் வலிமையின் நீட்சியை சரியாக அளக்கும் கருவியானது, ஒருவருக்கு கேடு வரும்போதேயாம். “அற்ற குளத்தில் அறு நீர்ப்பறவை” போன்றோரது நட்பு, கேடுவரும் கணமே காணாது போகும்.  உறுதியாக, நீண்டிருக்கும் நட்பு கேடு வந்த காலங்களிலும் தோளோடு தோள் நின்று கேடு தரும் வலியில் பங்கு கொள்ளும். கேட்டினாலும் நன்மை விளைவதைச் சுட்டுகின்ற குறளிது.  கேடே நட்பின் உறுதியை அல்லது போலி நட்பை அறிவுறுத்துகிற அளவாக இருக்கிறது.

nITTi aLappadOr kOl

kETTilnum – other than adversity

uNDO uRudi – is there anything else sturdy?

kiLainjarai – for friends

nITTi aLappadOr – to measue the extents of (friendship_

kOl – a scale?

To measure the extent of friendship, there is no better scale than an adverse time. As the water-dependent birds desert a waterbody, when it drains up, opportunistic friends desert immediately when the adversity and misfortune is at friend’s door step. Hence only an adversity is a true measuring scale to show the extent of a true friendship or lack of it.

“None better as a scale to measure the strength and extent of friendship,

 but adverse times, to see if a friend stays or runs away from hardship”
