குடிப்பிறந்து தன்கண் பழிநாணு வானைக்

கொடுத்தும் கொளல்வேண்டும் நட்பு.

                        (குறள் 794: நட்பாராய்தல் அதிகாரம்)

குடிப்பிறந்து - நல்ல குடிப்பிறப்பாளனும்

தன்கண் பழி  - தன் மேல் வரும்  பழிக்காக

நாணுவானைக் - வெட்கி அஞ்சுபவனுமான ஒருவரை

கொடுத்தும் - யாது கொடுத்தானும் (பொருள்)

கொளல்வேண்டும் - கொள்ள வேண்டும்

நட்பு - நட்பாக.

சிலருடைய நட்புக்காக சிறந்தவை எவற்றை வேண்டுமானாலும் கொடுக்கலாம். அத்தகைய பெருமை உடையவர்கள் யார்? நற்குடியிலே பிறந்து, தம்மேல் எவ்வித பழியும் வாராது வாழ்பவர்களே அவர்கள். அத்தகையோர் தம்மேல் பழிவந்துவிடுவதற்கு அஞ்சி நல்வழி அல்வழி நாடார். அத்தகையோரது நட்பை எப்பொருள் கொடுத்தாகிலும் கொள்ளலே நன்று, என்கிறது இக்குறள்.

Transliteration:

kuDipprandu thankaN pazhinANu vAnaik

koDuththum koLalvENDum naTpu

kuDipprandu – Born in good lineage

thankaN pazhi – blame on self

nANuvAnaik – fearing that (blame on self)

koDuththum – giving whatever it takes to get his (friendship)

koLalvENDum – one must secure

naTpu – his friendship.

For some friendships, we can give any cherished possession we have. Who is worthy of such friendship, is the question! Born of good lineage, fearing any blame that may befall even by accident, and treading only an ill-free good path, are such people, whose friendship is worth getting by giving anything in exchange or even as a price – says this verse.

“A person of great lineage and fearful of blame of blemish

 is worthy of our friendship by giving anything we cherish”
