ஆற்றாரும் ஆற்றி அடுப இடனறிந்து

போற்றார்கண் போற்றிச் செயின்.

                           (குறள் 493: இடனறிதல் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

ARRArum ARRi aDUba iDanaRindhu

pORRArkaN pORRich cheyin

ARRArum – Even the weak ones

ARRi – will be like one with strength

aDUba – can win (over enemies)

iDan aRindhu – if the proper place to win is selected

pORRArkaN – when with enemies

pORRich – dealing with (in war) them

cheyin- is done

This verse conveys a simple idea. Even the weak can become strong and win against their enemies. When? When they know which place is appropriate to engage with the enemies (war) and do so. In the chapter on “Patience” earlier VaLLuvar had said the true strength was to be patient with senseless fools. Such patience has no place when it comes to enemies and hence here he says strength is something that shows when engaging with enemies at the appropriate place, of course apart from time,

As already seen in the “Knowing the strength” chapter, knowing what befits self and learning all that must be learned for that is greater strength for someone – In that context, “place” becomes one of the several things that must be known by someone to feel strong.

"If the right place is understood, even the weak can feel strong

 too! Then if they face their enemies can anything go wrong?”

தமிழிலே:

ஆற்றாரும் - வலிமை அற்றவரும்

ஆற்றி - வலிமையுள்ளவர் போல்

அடுப - வெல்வர் (பகைவரிடத்தில்)

இடனறிந்து - வெல்லும் இடம் அறிந்து

போற்றார்கண் - பகைவர்களோடு

போற்றிச் - செய்யத்தக்கதாம் (போர்) வினையைச்

செயின் - செய்தால்

இக்குறள் சொல்வது எளியகருத்து. வலிமையற்றவரும் வலியராக மாறி வெல்லக்கூடும் தம்பகைவருக்கு எதிராக. ஏப்போது? எந்த இடத்தில் வெல்லலாம் என்பதை அறிந்து பகைவர்களோடு செய்யத்தக்கதான வினைகளை (போரினை) ஆற்றும் போது. பொறையுடமை அதிகாரத்தில் “வன்மையுள் வன்மை மடவார்ப் பொறை” என்று கூறுவார் வள்ளுவர். அறிவிலிகளிடம் பொறுமை காப்பதுதான் வலிமை என்றாலும், பகைவரிடம் அதைக் காட்டுதல் பயனில்லையே என்பதால் இவ்வதிகாரத்தில் வலிமை என்பது பகையை வெல்ல ஏற்ற இடத்தான் வருவதாகக் கூறுகிறார்

வலியறிதல் அறிதல் அதிகாரத்திலே சொல்லியபடி, தனக்குப் பொருந்தும் செயலையும் அதற்காக அறிய வேண்டியதையும் அறிந்து அதனிடம் நிலைத்து முயல்கின்றவர்க்கு முடியாதது ஒன்றும் இல்லை. (ஒல்வ தறிவது அறிந்ததன் கண்தங்கிச் செல்வார்க்குச் செல்லாதது இல்.) என்ற கருத்தை இங்கு பார்க்கும் போது, அறியவேண்டியவற்றுள் ஒன்றாக, “தக்க இடமும்” ஆகிவிடுகிறது.

இன்றெனது குறள்:

வலியற்றும் வெல்வர் வலியராய் ஒன்றார்

நலியுமிடம் தேர்ந்துசெய் யின்
