குறளின் குரல் - 380

பேதைப் படுக்கும் இழவூழ் அறிவகற்றும்

ஆகலூழ் உற்றக் கடை.

                              (குறள் 372: ஊழ் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

pEthaip padukkum izhvUzh aRivagaRRum

AkalUzh uRRak kaDai

pEthaip - foolishness

padukkum – will be theirs

izhvUzh – when the ruining fate (is there)

aRiv(u) – even when somebody has all the wisdome

agaRRum- that state will be removed (foolishness)

AkalUzh – the fate that gives all good

uRRak kaDai – when befall.

When a destructive spell of fate befalls on someone, even if the person is sensible otherwise, it will render him foolish. If the fate is gainful one, it will broaden and expand the wisdom in a person. This is what is convyed by this verse. As we will read later, vaLLuvar will ask in the last verse of this chapter, “what else is stronger than the fate itself?”  It stresses vaLLuvar’s belief in the power of fate. Fate can make or break a person and what one reeps is purely based on deeds of previous birth. The word “izhavu” (stems from the word tamil word “izhappu” - loss) is not an auscpicious word. The very usage of that word implies how strongly vaLLuvar believes in the power of “fate”

“While the destructive fate will only bring foolishness,

Gainful one will bring wisdom of blessed blissfulness”

தமிழிலே:

பேதைப் - அறிவின்மையைத்

படுக்கும் - தரும்

இழவூழ் - இழவு ஊழ் (கெடுக்கின்ற ஊழானது)

அறிவு - அறிவிருந்தும் கூட

அகற்றும் - அத்தன்மை அகலும் (அறிவின்மை அகலும்)

ஆகலூழ் - ஆக்கத்தைத் தரும் உழ்

உற்றக் கடை. - வந்து உற்ற போது

ஒருவருக்கு கெடுக்கின்ற விதியானது வரும் போது, அது அவர் அறிவுள்ளவராயிருந்தும், அவரை ஒன்றுமறியாத பேதைமையில் கொண்டுய்க்கும். அதுவே ஆக்கத்தைத் தரும் விதியாக வரும் போது அறிவு விரிவடைந்து துலங்கும். இதுவே இக்குறளின் பொருள். ஊழின் பெருவலி யாவுள என்று வள்ளுவரே கேட்கப்போகிறார் அதிகார இறுதியில். ஊழ் என்பதை நம்மை ஆக்கவல்லது, வீழ்த்த வல்லதுமான ஒரு வல்லமையாக சொன்னாலும், ஊழ் என்பது முன்வினைக் கருமங்களின் இப்பிறப்பு பயனேதான். இழவு (இழப்பு என்பதன் திரிபு) என்பது அமங்கலந்தைக் குறிக்க வழங்கிவரும் சொல். “இழவு ஊழ்” என்று சொல்லி அதை அழிக்கும் வன்மையின் உருவகமாகக் கொண்டு வள்ளுவர் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.

கலங்கும் அழிக்கின்ற ஊழால் அறிவு

துலங்குமதே ஆக்குமூ ழால்

thulangumadhE AkkumU zhAl

கலங்கு, துலங்கு என்ற சொற்களுக்குப்பதிலாக மயங்கு, இயங்கு என்ற சொற்களும் பொருந்திவரும்.

அழிக்கின்ற ஊழால் அறிவு கலங்கும்

விழிக்குமதே ஆக்குமூ ழால்
