இலனென்னும் எவ்வம் உரையாமை ஈதல்

குலனுடையான் கண்ணே யுள.

               (குறள் 223: ஈகை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

Ilanennum evvam uraiyAmai Idhal

kulanuDaiyAn kaNNE uLa

Ilanennum – those who begging because of poverty

evvam – their hardship and the pain of being devoid of wealth

uraiyAmai – without talking about that to others

Idhal – and giving (with whatever means is there to avail)   

kulanuDaiyAn kaNNE – such a remarkable quality, with people of nobility and good pedigree

uLa – is there,

One must not speak to others about those who come seeking charity, ridiculing their poor status; Also thye must be charitable to them without hesitation. Onlu such generosity is found in people of noble origin. People of such quality don’t even wait for the needy to ask them. They sense the need and helo when the help is needed.

Sangam works puRappaDal venPa, puranAnUru, and paripADal all have verses to say the same thing.

“irappadhan munnE avan kuRippai mugaththAn uNarndhu” (purappAdal vENpA 194)

“”iravAmal thandha iRaivar pOl”  (paripADal: 10:87.8),

“ Without talking about the charity seekers’ pain of poverty to others behind,

  And extend charity, is the the hallmark of people of good family background”

தமிழிலே:

இலனென்னும் - தன்னிடம் இல்லாது வறுமையினால் இரப்பவரின்

எவ்வம் - துன்பம்

உரையாமை - பற்றி பிறரிடத்தில் கூறாது (இது இரப்பவர்களின் மதிப்பழிக்கும் செயல்)

ஈதல் - அவ்வாறு இரப்பவர்க்கு வரையாது வழங்குதல்

குலனுடையான் கண்ணே - நல்குடி பிறந்தார் இடத்தே

உள - உள்ளது

தன்னிடம் இரப்பவர்களின் இல்லாமையாகிய வறுமையை ஏளனமாக நோக்கிப்பேசாமலும்,  தவிர அவர்களுக்கு வரையாது ஈதலும் நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோரிடமே உள்ளது. இத்தகைய பண்பினர் இரப்பவர் தம்மிடம் அவருடைய துன்பத்தைப்பற்றி கூறுவதற்கு முன்னரே குறிப்பறிந்து உதவும் தன்மையினர்.

புறநானூற்று உரையில் (204:3) , “ இரப்பதன் முன்னே அவன் குறிப்பை முகத்தான் உணர்ந்து இதனைக் கொள்வாயாக என்று சொல்லித்தான் இரந்து கொடுத்தல்” என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது. புறவெண்பா (194), “ இரவாமல் ஈந்த இறைவர்போல்” என்கிறது. பரிபாடல் (10:87.8), “இல்லது நோக்கி இளிவரவு கூறாமுன் நல்லது வெஃகி விநைசெய்வார்” என்னும்.

இன்றெனது குறள்:

இல்லாதார் இன்னா இயம்பாமல் ஈதலே

நல்லோர் குலத்து வழி
